Hi folks. My iMac 21 1/2 2010 running 10.13.6 is very slow to come out of sleep mode. I have only upped to 13 a week or so ago and did an upgrade and not a clean install. Since then it has got slower. It was OK just after the change, but it seems to be getting slower?

I have tried a search and found a lot of hits on the same theme, but no real answers. So, any ideas please folks? I can't do a clean instal at the moment until we have finished our house move. SWMBO, and me, are worried that if during the move it goes toes up !!!:Grimmace::Grimmace::Grimmace:

No Harry. Our iMac is running on a 2 Tb hybrid SSHD. But I suppose that the OS should be on the SS section?

I am not too sure just how that bit works though? I can't remember the size of the SS bit but I think that it's 6 or 8 gig?

I probably won't have a lot of time today as we collect the keys for our new, to us, bungalow this morning !!!:Cool::Cool::Cool:

My 2010 iMac i7 is doing something similar since one of the early betas of High Sierra. Before that install it woke up in less than 1 second but sometimes now takes 5+ seconds. Plays havoc with Plex Media server that I also run on that imac.

Tomorrow I am going to try Sierra which is on a partition on the same drive and see if it's back to normal waking up from sleep.

If it's any consolation - doubtful - I upgraded to macOS High Sierra about 6 weeks ago. I have a few niggles & dissatisfactions versus macOS Sierra; but by far the "wake from sleep" is the biggest.

As you can see from my specs, I have a 1TB SSD on my iMac, just over 50% free (unused). On Sierra, waking was achieved almost instantaneously. On HS, I time it at about 11 seconds. I live with it; but is that the norm???

On my 2009 iMac, I would wake from sleep is no more than 5 seconds. Everything is back and another couple of seconds for the WiFi to reconnect before I can continue. This is with a 1TB SSD. On my 2017 MBP, the wake is sub 1 second to fully operational.

Update: I just timed my 2009 iMac from where it was sleeping (which is normally does when I'm away) and I clicked on the trackpad to wake it up to use the machine. I used the stopwatch to determine at what time I could see something on the screen and use the computer. Across multiple tries I average out at about 1.4 seconds from click to functioning. This is on 10.13.6.

Well, at least I am not alone in this?

But, now something else had happened. We have been out all day with the iMac asleep. On return home it took a while to awake and then stuck the proverbial 2 fingers in the air! Now, the bluetooth mouse we have will move the cursor, scroll the mailboxes in Mail, but will not react to any click. We also have a Magic Mouse on bluetooth on the same machine. I use that left handed. for lots, like scrolling as it is much better.

It will select the drop down from the Apple, top right, logo, but will not click on any selection anywhere on the screen. The Apple drop down stayes dropped down aand the only way to get any response is to press the power button until the thing powers of completely.

so far I have done this 3 times with the same result.

I have just tried the power button kill and reboot and then, when everything is up again, 4th time, I wondered what a right click on the Apple and then the sleep on the drop down. It went to sleep. BUT when I tried a right click, after waking it, on any of the open programmes, nothing!

I am now totally confused and going to get my dinner!

This is really getting silly?

I havee noticed that when the iMac reboots the programme that sits on top of the windows is Dropbox. I don't use it, don't want it and as yet have not found out how to stop it opening on reboot?

The odd thing is that the programmes the open behind it, when you hover the cursor over the 'treffic lights' top left corner of the window they turn to the normal red/orange/greem, but on the dropbox window they remain uncoloured.

I am now wondering if the dropbox programme has got itself into a knot that's screwing up the rest of the system?

I am passed the point where I can sort these kind of things when I am very tired, so I will get to bed and maybe by the morning the 'Tooth Fairy' will have sorted it O:)O:)

Congratulations on your new digs, and yes I had to do some checking as to what the Brits refer to as bungalow.

But it's not very good that you and a few others seem to be having some problems in Apple land lately. I hope you and they get it all sorted out fairly soon.

It seems quite odd that our MacBook Pro is also on HS and there aren't any of the same problems. Open the lid, awake from sleep in a couple of seconds or less. It's been on HS a lot longer too.

One thing different on the iMac is that Dropbox comes up on a restart on the iMac and as I don't use it I have tried to stop that, but I can't find out how to do stop it on reboot? Any ideas on that one?

If I remember correctly a bungalow down there is a shed up here Patric? But whet ever else ours ain't a shed mate:Cool::Cool: That article is not very accurate as far as they are concerned though. Bungalows are not cheaper in this bit of England and they are not normally that small. Plus, they are selling like the proverbial hot cakes!!!::Evil::Evil:

What are the specs on your 2010 iMac? Mine is quad core I7 and 32 GB RAM. Takes 5-10 seconds. Seems to vary. I do not have Dropbox on it either.

Also like you my MBP in my case late 2011 does not take more than 1 second to wake up. It's something with the chipset in the iMac and High Sierra. That is my guess.

see if this helps with Dropbox uninstall.

Uninstall the desktop app on Mac OS X
Click the Dropbox icon in the menu bar.
Click the gear icon and select Preferences...
Select the Account tab.
Click Unlink this Dropbox...
Click the Dropbox icon from the menu bar again.
Click the gear icon and select Quit Dropbox.
Open the Applications folder in Finder.
Drag the Dropbox app file from Applications to the Trash.

Your Dropbox folder and its contents will remain intact. If you'd like to remove the folder as well, you can drag your Dropbox folder to the Trash.

Remove the files in your Dropbox Folder

If you would like to remove the files in your Dropbox folder from your hard drive, drag your Dropbox folder to the Trash.
This will delete your local Dropbox folder. Any files in your local Dropbox folder that haven't synced won't be available on dropbox.com.

If you’re having trouble uninstalling the Dropbox app, follow these steps:
Open Activity Monitor. This utility is usually located in the “Applications” folder, under “Utilities”.
In the Activity Monitor, look for lines that say “Dropbox.”
Click a line that says “Dropbox.”
Click the X to force quit the process.
Repeat steps 3 and 4 for each line that says “Dropbox.”
Try to uninstall Dropbox again.

If you do not want to remove Dropbox but just stop it from coming up everytime it boots up open system preferences, Users and click on Login Items. Is Dropbox in the list? If so highlight it and click the Minus at the bottom of that window.

Sorry Denis, but I missed your post on what the spec was.

I found the way to stop Dropbox opening Patrick and that's now out of the way. Ta for your help. This morning in my usual stupor I was getting you mixed up with Harry, hence the 'you down there' bit. I am at the point where I'm not sure which way is up at the moment. Still, it will come back to me, but it's very difficult trying to walk when you are lying down :eek:

I think (not very often!) that I have cured the mouse left click problem. It seemed to be associated with the bluetooth mouse. I remembered just where our USB mouse was. So that connected I turned bluetooth off and back on again. That seems to have sorted the problem. We have both a Logicom mouse and a Apple Magic mouse. I tend to use the Magic jobbie for scrolling, left handed, and the Logicom for clicking. I have used 2 mouses/mice for as long as I can remember with no problems, so that isn't the cause me-thinks? I have to admit that I was at the point where I was thinking of a system erase and reload! Not what we want or need at the moment, so I'm chuffed to bits with the result.

When i awakened the iMac to do this a few minutes ago I came to in just a couple of seconds. So I will watch it, but I wonder if it was Dropbox?
