I have a mid 2012 15" MacBook Pro Retina display which I have to replace. Apple has not said how many nits the display is. The new M1 Air display has 400 nits. My 2012 MacBook isn't quite bright enough for me. I don't know if the brightness has deteriorated. I am thinking of getting one of the new iPads for increased brightness but prefer the form factor of a laptop. Does anyone know if the M1 Air display will be noticeably brighter than my 2012 MacBook? Thanks

I'm not sure if anyone will have a good answer for you on this. It's very much possible that the display has deteriorated. How long have you personally had it, and was it bright enough at one point? You could consider the M1 MacBook Pro, which has a 500-nit display. Or just go to the store and try them.

Thanks very much Lisa. I have owned it since 2012 when I bought it new. It certainly seemed bright enough when I bought it but now owning a newer iMac, the laptop seems not bright enough. Good idea to go to an Apple Store. I will take my MacBook and compare side by side. Not sure when that will happen because we are pretty locked down here in Toronto. Is there much noticeable difference between 400 and 500 nits. I assume that it is not 25% brighter. Thanks again for your reply!

Yes, as I mentioned in my original post, I am considering an iPad but prefer the form factor of a laptop. Lots of nits in the M1 iPad Pro 12.9

The difference should be noticeable as 500 nits is around 20% or more brighter than 400 nits. But not everyone perceives display brightness or clarity the same which is why you really need to see in person and compare.

My suggestion same as Lifeisabeach & Chscag. Probably best to go to a local Apple Store (if possible)...take your MacBook Pro with you...and compare things side by side.:)

Hmmm...??? You start out asking about brightness and then end up talking about a different form factor that uses a completely different OS and I daresay not one highly recommended for getting a lot of work done, but an attached keyboard and mouse may help it.

But maybe you are changing the way and how you work as well???

Thanks Patrick. I appreciate your reply but I am only asking about screen brightness. Anything that I need to do can easily be handled by an iPad or MacBook.

Well, a Google search seems to indicate that Apple’s new iPad Pro display is better and brighter among the various hits at:

with the article and report here:
Apple says the 12.9-inch iPad Pro can reach 1,000 nits of full-screen brightness — on par with the ultra-expensive Pro Display XDR — and portions of the screen can hit an eye-searing 1,600 nits when playing HDR content. That’s brighter than many 4K HDR TVs on the market.

Do you think that would be bright enough for you??? 😏
