I've looked at other posts dealing with this issue and have run the Disk Utility on the drive and the apple image and it reported no problems which I assume means the sdd should be ok. Is there any repair option I can run without losing the user data or is it going to be a case of removing the ssd copying the data (and testing it further) then putting it back and restoring the OS?

Apparently the local Apple store have taken a look at it and quoted £500 to fix it but didn't say what the problem was..

Yes, I checked out some videos on YouTube. If the reinstall fails I've got somebody who can usually repair the logic board which the ssd seems to be an integral part of, for a reasonable amount

Apple quoted you £ 500 because in order to replace the SSD, the entire logic board must be changed out. Very likely with a refurbished one.

If you can find someone there in the UK who can do the specialized soldering, desoldering that's needed to replace the SSD, it may be less expensive. Let us know.

The owner was told that the ssd was ok but I need to get hold of a charger to see if the OS will reinstall. I think the Apple store were hoping he would buy a new MacBook. I'll let you know how it goes but with this bloody UK lockdown coming I'm not sure if the company I use for Mac repairs is going to be open or not.
