In trying to reduce Internet data usage on a MBP with Yosemite 10.10.3 we found that a process named nsurlsessiond with a user of nsurlsessiond was downloading like crazy. the computer had been doing nothing except sitting there when the thread started. Since we have a 4G Internet connection it grabbed a bunch of data really quickly. The download was stopped by turning off the WiFi at which time we tracked down the process via Process Monitor.

My question is how to find out what started this unrequested, at least by the user, download. In looking at another MBP with the same OSx level, I found two of the same threads that were not doing anything. I just need to be able to track down what started the download so it can be turned off. At this point all we can do is to kill the thread, but I'm sure it will restart probably on the next logon or reboot.

The computer has been gone over and everything we can think of has been turned off for updates, but obviously something is trying.

Ideas? All are welcome and thanks.

Cliff

What does the Activity Monitor.app show on the affected MacBook Pro?

Too many devices to list
nsurlsessiond is a process that is part of the iCloud sync service. In other words, some app is trying to sync content to iCloud. I'm guessing that this is either Photos, something syncing to iCloud Drive or, if you are using Apple Music, perhaps music being synced to iCloud Music Library. Do any of those seem plausible?

Thanks everyone for your input.

As far as we can tell so far the issue was that somehow the App Store auto downloads got turned on when an update was done for Safari and HP printer drivers recently. App Store is the first thing we make sure is off after an install and we don't expect it to change by itself, but, and I can't explain it, it seems to have gotten re-enabled without anyone being aware of it. The Apple Support Community discussion of the issue was helpful as well. Seems as if background network traffic is a gotcha for a lot of people. Now we know what to do if it crops up again and all the possible places that can generate background traffic.

Sure is great to have this forum where one can yell help and get it so quickly.

Blessing to everyone,
Cliff
