Is anyone on here using a Canon 4200 Series Printer/Scanner (MG4250 is mine) with Big Sur on an M1 Mac? Just downloaded drivers for my Canon printer an added my printer to my new 24" M1 iMac as 'Canon MG4200 Series Bonjour Multifunction'. (There was another option to 'Add Printer' called 'Canon MG4200 Series IJ Network' but I think I tried that earlier and it only showed the 'Print' tab not both the Print and Scan tabs to click on. BTW, I didn't use Migration Assistant to transfer everything from the old iMac as I had problems doing that so I used AirDrop instead. That will be why I'm having to install the printer afresh I suppose.

I found this link to the operator's manual which may or may not provide an idea:

But - I am wondering if when you installed the drivers you had some sort of Security & Privacy setting issue.

I have an HP currently but have had several Canons in the past with scanning but I don't remember anything special with the set up - sorry.

I just hooked up a new Mac mini with the M1 chip, I have a Canon 7500 series printer and it works perfectly.
I connect to my printer wirelessly and it functions well with all our devices.

Any chance you could upload photos of your drivers in the Canon folder in your Applications folder?

Hi Jeff. The printers use a bi-directional method to talk each way to devices ( Printer <> Mac). You might find using a cable to connect would work. You might be blocked by wi-fi "security" preventing your printer talking to the Mac. Something you can look at ?

Hi Jeff

You could try this - below - because I've had precisely the same problem and I'm sure it's a question of "Permissions" somewhere along the line.

From System Preferences, Click on Printer & Scanners. With the default being on Print, you will see a statement "Share this printer on the Network". Uncheck it, if checked. To do this you will need to unlock the Padlock (bottom left) with your Admin Password.

Now Click on "Sharing Preferences". Unlock its Padlock with your Admin PW. On the Left Side, you will see a list of Services. Tick "Printer Sharing".

To the Right, your Printer should be identified - Canon in your case - Tick the box next to it. And to the Right of it make sure it says Users - "Everyone Can Print". If it doesn't, use the disclosure triangles and choose that option.

Also, make sure that your Computer Name is correct at the top of the screen.

See if that works. Now, I realise that at no time have I mentioned, nor can one access "Scan" Preferences"; but what I've asked to do above may sort things out.

If this does NOT work for you, the only other option is to "Reset Printing System" and re-download and Install the Printer Driver.

I can walk you through that if needed. It's a bit complicated.

Please post back.

The error message says that it is a permission problem. That's typical of applications in recent versions of the Mac OS that require "full disk access" permission to be able to do their job.

Go into: System Preferences --> Security & Privacy
click on the Privacy tab
click on the lock icon in the lower left and put in your password to unlock things
now add your Canon scanner program to the list of programs with full disk access.

does the scanner show up if you open Image Capture? I do all my scanning through that app with zero issues.

Mine didn't, Nicky. Can't speak for Jeff. (OP). I solved my issue in the past in a most laborious way. Jake's Link does the job in 30 seconds if you follow the instructions therein.

Edited for additional info.

Hi Jake - Yes, as Ian said, a great find, thank you. I have done the workaround and it now works on the iMac which is fantastic. I've done the same workaround on the MBA but unfortunately it doesn't work there. However, as long as I can scan from the iMac I'm happy! It is strange though that the workaround won't work for the MBA. Both the MBA and the iMac are M1 devices and both up to date with the same latest Big Sur 11.5.2. Many many thanks to all who contributed. This is a great forum!(y)

Hi Nicky and Ian - Just wanted to add that prior to Nicky mentioning Image Capture, I didn't know it existed!! For scanning I've always gone via Settings/Printers and Scanners/Scan, so I've now got two choices for scanning. Thank you. As I've mentioned in my reply to Jake above the workaround doesn't work for my MBA. On the iMac I can now scan via Settings/Printers and Scanners/Scan and also via Image Capture but neither of those two routes work on the MBA.

I have a G6020 Pixma, and don't remember doing anything when I migrated to my M1 iMac. When I run the scan program, it searches for a moment before printing. But I just discovered now that when I go to System Preferences/Printers & Scanners/Scan, and click on "Open Scanner", nothing happens.

I have a Brother Printer/Scanner Copier, older one had fax also, but as it's so easy to fax on a Mac now. Despite my Brother being about 8 years old, went on Brother site and was able to find and download the software drivers that got my Brother DCP-170 C working again as I had at least 6 unused cartridges of Cyan, Yellow,Magenta & Black cartridges. The company use Brother but refill their own ink which is as good as Brother. If you buy 4 sets of cartridges, they give you a printer/scanner /photocopier for free see Recycled cheap inkjet printer ink cartridges, laser toner cartridges, inkjet printer cartridges for Brother, Canon, Epson, HP, Lexmark and Dell printers - IJT Direct Also sell phones, memory, SSD drives and more.

Update: The original problem was solved for a while but then started to play-up and I recently started to have problems with my iMac and printer connecting wirelessly, so decided to go back to connection via a lead and everything works perfectly. Has been fine for about 1 week now so hoping all will be well long term.
