Personal view:

I think that AppCleaner is a great app which cleans out most, if not all, of the bits of "scruff" associated with an app you wish to remove as well as the app itself.

I have no association with the owners of this app. Just a personal opinion from a long-time user.

Hi Ron - I assume you mean the app below? As w/ Ian and Bob, I've been using this program to remove unwanted apps for years now - usually just select their default removals although occasionally unchecked files presented which I usually also remove if the descriptions are similar to the other detritus - bottom line - use with confidence. Dave :)

The icons are not the same. The app I have also is what Bob and Dave have talked about and the icon looks like this:

And comes from here: AppCleaner

It works well.

I don't know what app your icon is for.

Mine too(y)
I note that the one pictured in Dittoman1's post is called App Cleaner and Uninstaller, I can't find it anywhere on the App Store but I'm not sure an "uninstaller" is really required in most cases. Where it is the developer usually provides one. AppCleaner, as we all know, simply puts the removed files in the Trash which I like.

As a new Mac user App Cleaner is new to me, just having looked at it, it would seem that I need to drop the installed app icon which I wish to uninstall in the folder. With this assumption, any apps already removed will not be cleaned up.

If an app is already removed/uninstalled, you can't uninstall it again in the future.

AppCleaner allows you to drag an app to it or you can get a list of installed applications and have it remove things.

Just dragging the application will do 98% of the work of removing an application, it's just a bunch of configuration files that get left behind which AppCleaner removes for you.

While this is the recommended way/app for the bulk of the applications, there are a small subset of applications that you should uninstall using their provided uninstaller since things installed elsewhere in the system need to be unregistered which won't be through AppCleaner.

One quick example that comes to mind is either Parallels or VMWare Fusion. Beyond the application and the VM, these apps install a number of Kernel services to be able to get the VM to function, ideally these should be removed along with the application.

I have used CleanMyMacX for many years which seems to work very well with completely uninstalling an app as well as cleaning out system junk which builds up.

Bad idea. This is garbage app that ends up deleting stuff to "make room" Just search these forums or elsewhere.

For uninstalling, folks should stick with provided uninstaller, dragging the app to the trash or apps like AppCleaner. Nothing more.

It seems from the icons being posted, the applications are different but meant for the same process and they're developed from two separate Developers.

In case it matters to anyone, and the appropriate icons are included below:

Personally, I have used App Cleaner and occasionally CleanMyMacX, but I find App Cleaner simpler and fast and easy to understand the optional included files it includes.

Like many "cleaning" apps it charges a pretty steep yearly subscription fee, suggests it do a number of tasks already easily done using System Settings like; changing default apps for specific file types, managing browser extensions, disabling Startup/login applications ect.
I wouldn't pay $15 a year for what I can do for free much less $8 a month for the basic app.

I'm not sure which application(s) you are referring to Rod, but I use the FREE (donations accepted) App Cleaner.app, and it seems, an old non-subscription version of CleanMyMac I picked up years ago, and probably amongst a Mac bundle.

I would agree that a subscription for App Cleaner & Uninstaller.app and/or CleanMyMacX.app are both excessive and expensive for what they do. And the Canadian price for CleanMyMacX just for one Mac is crazy at:
Plan for 1 Mac
$53.70 CAD

No thanks, not at that price and never with a continuing subscription payment. That's a crazy expensive pricing considering it's not the only method available for doing any Mac clean up as you mentioned. But I guess such applications will always have some followers.

Patrick, I was referring to the app in question, App Cleaner and Uninstaller by Nectony. Like you I use App Cleaner by Freemacsoft.

Thanks Rod, I thought that was the case but I didn't want to make an erroneous assumption and just asked to make sure.
