Use the built-in Keyboard Viewer.

Or use the system preferences > keyboard > shortcuts and create your own custom key equivalent.

Or if you are using a mouse that has customizable buttons, make one of them capable of doing the enter keystroke.

neither of those options work for this Yosemite OS

find that rather surprising, but if you say so...

Maybe one or more of the suggestions from here might help and be able to do what you want:

The built-in keyboard viewer doesn't work? If that's the case, then there's probably nothing wrong with your actual keyboard. For whatever reason, macOS simply isn't recognizing the "Return" key input, physically or virtually. Otherwise, there's no good reason for the virtual keyboard to not be working.

you obviously don't have Yosemite.

LOL! Accessing the Keyboard Viewer has been done the same way for quite a long time. But hey, feel free to believe differently. Game over, man, game over. Wait on your replacement.

there's no shortcut for the enter key which is why an app is needed

Are you saying that you do not have a mouse or if you do have a mouse does not using it to click a particular key in the Keyboard Viewer make that key work???

If it doesn't I'm guessing something else must be goofy as well. But I have no idea what... Sorry...
