Backorder on New M1 iMac's!

Trying to get a new M1 iMac, and as far as I can tell *everyone* is backordered several weeks. Never seen this before. What's going on?

I don't know if this is part of the problem in your case, but there have been reports of chip shortages for various devices (cars, some appliances, etc.).

That's known as "Supply and Demand". And what Slydude said above....

Supplies of chips and other components are increasing but it will take awhile to catch up to the demand. Be patient and you should be getting a shipping date soon.

My point simply was that in all of my orders of Apple equipment, I've never seen long backorder times. That's known as "Something Unusual Going On". I don't think PCs are backordered right now. If Apple routinely saw monthlong backorders, their demand would decrease. They know it, so they don't just brush it off as Supply and Demand".

I've seen backorders in the past...especially for new iPhones & back when iPads were all the rage. It's usually not super common with computers.

A possible explanation could be (in addition to what Slydude mentioned above)...it's rumored Apple is due to come out with the new M1X or M2 Apple silicon chip soon (in about to be announced new computer models). Who knows...Apple may be using some CPU production capacity to build up inventories of the new chips (M1X or M2).

That's an interesting point. I believe the M1X and M2 are aimed at higher-end machines, but maybe they compete for CPU production capability.

Yes rumors are very likely Apple will continue to use M1 chips in the entry level & maybe mid-level current & newer models...and M1X or M2 chips used in just higher end units (maybe mid-range too).

Possible if the production facility has multiple production lines...if there are 5 production lines...maybe all 5 previously made all M1 chips. Now maybe 3 lines make M1...and 2 lines make the new M1X/M2 chip (or some other combination). Just a theory.

Personally I'm waiting to see what Apple announces as far as new models with the M1X/M2 chip...and what the prices are. If reasonable...I'm going to get an M1X/M2 based unit. If too much $$$$...then I'll settle for a M1 unit.

It's hard to say. From reading the MacRumors thread, it seems Apple is all over the time frame with really no positive dates one way or the other.

After you place your order, Apple will inform you of an approximate shipping date. However, that date could slip or be moved up.

Things are looking up though with regard to backorders. My advice is if you order a new 24" iMac, make sure you don't dispose of your older Mac until the new M1 iMac arrives.

Thank you. I would never get rid of the old before I had the new because I use Set Up Assistant or Migration Assistant to transfer everything!

I ordered my 2020 13" MBP customized when it was first available. I waited several weeks for it. I ordered an iPhone 12 Max when it first came out and it took several weeks to arrive too.

Whenever Apple has a new product come out the pre-orders tend to be huge and the wait is anywhere from a week to months depending on your configuration and the demand for it.

Also - my son works for a company that makes the wafers(?) material that they make chips on. His company has been working non stop around the clock since this whole COVID mess drove up the demands for chips.

I’m in the UK and ordered my 24” iMac this week. Delivery is quoted as 5th to 9th August. I don’t have a problem with that as my old iMac still works. I’m trading it in but an keep it until new one arrives and can then do MA.

I waited quite a while for a MB Air about a year ago. Sometimes demand just exceeds the supply. You can probably get it quicker if you order a less-popular color. (Blue is the big seller.)

I ordered an M1 Imac and was promised delivery by Apple. It arrived on exactly the day they released them. It seems that most retailers are waiting for delivery.
