Best browser for 10.6.8?

Hi just picked up an iMac 24" from a friend with Mac OS X 10.6.8 what is the best browser for it. It's clean and I would just love to know.

Probably Firefox unless you can find an older version of Safari or Chrome which still supports Snow Leopard. Maybe even Opera?

Snow Leopard OS X.6.8 is a very old operating system. If you use Safari, that is tied to the operating system an cannot be updated. Firefox will run on OS X.6 and is probably the best option at this stage. OS X.6. OS X.7 and OS X.8 are no longer supported by Apple or Firefox, but will work with no future updates. Tell us more about this 24" iMac? Click on the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then give us all the information from the pop up window.

Hopefully it will be a 2009 model and we can gently lead you to update to El Capitan OS X.11, the latest system it can run.

Technically speaking this is a September, 2006 computer. In its day this was a top of the line computer. But of course now it's about a 9.5 year's old.

The newest Mac OS it can run is 10.7.5. It's now running 10.6.8...and the browsers for OS 10.8 (two OS versions newer than 10.6.8) are pretty much out-dated.

This doesn't mean this computer doesn't have any life left in it. But with OS 10.7.5...max RAM (4gig) installed...and the newest browser that it can run...you will still run into the occasional webpage that will not load (getting more numerous every day)...or allow you to do certain things.

You can't update to a browser for OS X 10.6 that is perfectly modern, but you can get pretty close.

The old version of Safari, which came with your Mac, is no longer completely stable, it's outdated, and it can't be updated.

Personally I've switched to Firefox version 48.0.2 as the default browser on my old iMac running OS X 10.6.8. You can download that older version of Firefox from here:

This version is quite modern. I'm very happy with it.

You can also download the very latest version of Flash Player, to use with Firefox (to play animated Flash content), and it will work perfectly:

I'm also told (but can't personally verify) that an older version of the browser iCab (version 5.2) works nicely in OS X 10.6:

Well the latest version for OS X.6.8 and it is probably version 47.x. The latest version is 50.1.0.

Thanks to all contributors for all your help. I've updated Firefox to the latest version. It's a shame Apple don't support older versions.

Remember this is a 2007 computer (10 years old). That's very old for a computer.

- Apple's definition of "vintage" is 5-7 years old.
- Apple's definition of "obsolete" is greater than 7 years.

It can certainly still get plenty done. Just putting things into perspective.

Randy: Thanks for the link to the Flash upgrade. Also using Firefox 48.02. Videos were getting impossible to watch, very scratchy, etc.

If I upgrade, I would have to buy the latest version of my pcb layout software, so I'm holding on as long as I can.

Wow, never looked at Osmond, though I have a friend that uses it.

I have been using McCad PCB-ST since '89. I recently emailed back and forth with one of their software guys, trying to understand pad stacks. He couldn't believe PCB-ST 2.5.0.27 would work on 10.6.8 (such an old machine).

Also, I use the drawing program in AppleWorks 6.2.9, though it is getting a little buggy. I understand it will go away if I upgrade.

I highly recommend that you stop using AW (AppleWorks) for creating drawings, that you move to a more modern replacement, and that you convert all of your existing AW drawing documents into a more modern format *immediately*.

The problem is that AW has been discontinued for years now, and translators for AW file formats are becoming scarce. You need to translate your documents before translators for them become extinct. Already AW's drawing format is the hardest of the AW formats to find translators for. As far as I know, only certain versions of EasyDraw can be used to translate them into something more modern.

The App Store version of EasyDraw is 64-bit, costs $30, and does NOT import legacy formats such as AppleWorks.
The 32-bit version, EasyDraw Retro, is still available for $95 directly from the developer's web site. It DOES support legacy formats.
