Hello everyone.

I really need some assistance. I recently borrowed my friend's M1 Macbook pro 13 and the screen cracked for seemingly no reason. It was fine when I closed it the night before and the next morning when I opened it it had two cracks in the lower left-hand corner. Instead of paying to get it fixed, I arranged with my friend to purchase the machine. I was considering a screen replacement but factoring in the cost I'd be paying for the device, spending extra just to get it fixed seems like a lot of money. Would it be better for me to invest in an external monitor instead and use it that way? Another option was to get an older iPad pro 12.9 and use that as sort of a screen replacement but with touch functionality as well as an extra mobile device if I want to take the MacBook on the road, or should I just go ahead and repair the screen and forget about those workarounds? Would love some advice. By the way, this is my first Macbook.

Is this MBP still under warranty? If so, you can potentially use that to get the screen replaced paying the deductible.

If it's not under warranty, if you can live with the cracks when you are mobile with the computer, you can just grab an external monitor and use the MBP in clamshell mode.

Thanks for the response. No, it's not. And my friend was told that even if it was they don't fix issues related to the screen. I think that's definitely an option that I'm looking at as it relates to using it in clamshell mode.

I just did some checking. If you were interested in a DIY ("do-it-yourself") project...a complete display for a 13" M1 MacBook Pro can be purchased for around $285 (not too bad for a complete assembly like this).

Not sure what country you're located in (prices may vary). Price I got was from eBay US...and Powerbook medic.com.

HTH,

Nick

Assuming things are similar to the way stuff works in the US as in Jamaica (assuming that's where you're located based on your username), If you purchase AppleCare+ (beyond the basic AppleCare), then you have 2 incidents within 12 months fixed for $99 if it's screen or external damage. If it's anything else, the deductible is $299.

Either way, since it's not under warranty, it's a moot point, but for the future you might want to keep this information handy.

Do price out the screen replacement and compare that to a good monitor, that'll help you with your decision and obviously if you want to use it more as a notebook as opposed to desktop that's going to sway you one way or another.

Thank you. I definitely will. I have a Surface Pro 5 that's my go-to device at work. I wanted to use the M1 as a device to do video editing and live streaming with Davinci Resolve and OBS so it's more of a home computer. I think I might be better off using the second display. The only challenge is that there are times I might want to take it on the road. Would buying an Ipad to use as a monitor work in that scenario?

The eBay link is just an example. You could certainly choose a different seller.

Hey Guys, just an update. So, i decided to pick up a Gtek portable monitor for about 140 bucks to use with the MacBook pro. I figure it will be at home mostly and if I need to take it on the road I'll have the portable monitor to use. Thanks for the advice.

Good solution. If it's mostly going to be used at home...an external monitor is a good choice. I do this all the time (internal + external display with my 15" MacBook Pro).

Nice that you took responsibility for it. That's a friend for sure.
