My HP1012 laser jet printer worked with my old iMac.

I got a new M1 Chip MacBook Air and although the MacBook saw the 1012 printer it would not print saying "Missing USB Class Driver". The old printer has a regular USB plug, and I connected out through an adapter hub for the USB $ Thunderbird ports on the computer. The charger for the MacBook works plugged into the hub or the computer. My old Trackball works plugged into the hub, my iPhone works to backup to the computer through the hub. Apple Support had me try the things I had already done, they had no new better ideas and said it must be incompatible. Sigh. They were not sure if it related to Big Sur or the new Apple chip.

I bought an HP Laser Jet Pro M15W at Best Buy. It worked through the USB adapter too. But it didn't work for air printing as it should. It connected to my Wifi but no device could find it. I returned it after several hours of trying all kinds of settings. I have ordered a Brother Compact Monochrome Laser Printer, HL-L2350DW, Wireless Printing, from Amazon at my son's recommendation. I am hoping it will work wirelessly. -- it won't arrive until the weekend.

Is anyone using Big Sur on a silicon Mac and printing?

The printer driver has to be compatible with the current OS you are using. Some old models don't have updates and the newest may not yet be ready. Check compatibility with Big Sur with Brother website. My five-year-old Canon is talking to Big Sur.

Is that a supported Air Print printer, and have you gone through the setup and troubleshooting procedures???:
HP LaserJet Pro - Set up, Install, and Configure AirPrint

My old HP doesn’t have drivers available on line anymore. I will check the Borther website.

The new HP i bought and returned is an air printer and I did all the procedures and had my son who is very well versed in computer issues took control of my Mac from another state and dI’d even more than 99% of computer users could do and used Terminal as well...and we had no joy. I trouble shoot several friends computers and devices and was surprised that I could not make it work but astonished when my son could not. I wonder if the X1 Gateway modem from Comcast and that printer don’t play nicely.

Not true. I have the same printer and it's working fine with my iMac and Catalina. (iMac 27" 2017 model)

HP printer drivers are available: version 5.1.

Besides that, the open source Gutenprint drivers are available and work better than those from HP. You can download them from: (Gutenprint 5.3.3)

No Patrick it's not supported officially. Too old.

However, you can still use Air Print if you download Printopia ($19.99)
