I am in receipt of emails from a sender who persists in sending me emails regardless of my not wanting them. Is there a way that I can block this sender and have the emails he sends bounced back to him as undeliverable?

Thanks so much.

Have your ISP do it. Mark the email as unwanted junk and report it to your ISP and let them filter it out. I do that with my gmail account when I receive persistent advertisement emails and they have always taken care of it for me.

Hello Bheki - your previous two posts date to 2012, so welcome BACK to the forum! ;)

You really need to provide us more information: 1) What computer are you using (model/year); 2) What OS X is installed; 3) Are you using the Mail App of the OS X that is on your computer; 4) How is your mail setup - e.g. ISPs, web-based sites (like Yahoo, Gmail), etc.; 5) Have you explored the spam & rules options in the Mail App and also your ISP's website; and 6) What have you done so far to prevent these emails from reaching your 'inbox' (vs. being sent to a folder such as 'bulk' or trash)?

In addition, if not too personal, what is the nature of these emails, e.g. an ad site, spam, or other? - answers to these questions will help. Dave :)

P.S. where are you living - may impact on the suggestions given?

Hi,
I'm using a Macbook Pro, Yosemite, version 10.10.4. I purchased it 3 years ago and this is my first Apple computer. I am using Safari and the email program that it comes with.
The sender is a former acquaintance who I no longer wish to communicate with as he is overbearing. Mainly he sends web links and attempts to engage me in conversation. Hope I haven't left anything out. If so, please let me know.

Hi again - as already suggested, you can visit your ISP's website, i.e. where your email is handled, and likely set up some rules there to send the unwanted messages to junk or another folder. Or you can open Apple's Mail Preferences and look @ the Rules tab (see image below) - there you can set up a rule that will send the messages to another location - up to you - let us know the results. Dave :)

I just followed your instructions above and I will know in a few days if I'am no longer receiving emails from that particular sender.

Will let you know.

Thanks again for your advice.

P.S. I forgot to mention that after I adjusted the Mail Preferences and applied the Rule, there was a short paragraph asking do you want to Apply Your Rules to Messages in Selected Mailboxes, etc.........Select Apply, Don't Apply. I selected Don't Apply as I wasn't sure what this meant.

Hi again - I've applied only a handful of rules in the Mail App (usually use my Yahoo address web-based client), but should work as setup above - let us know your results. Dave :)

These instructions worked great. However, I had a Dumbo moment where I failed to insert the sender's email address and left mine in the field instead. Consequently, I blocked my own messages. Should have been obvious, but even after owning my MAC for 3 + years I am still at Newbie level. Anyway, I've straightened it out now.

rule for sending back unwanted email

I have already set up the rule to have the unwanted senders email address to go to trash or spam. Is there anyway to send an automated message to the unwanted sender that the email was returned or something like that?

Are you wanting to send a message so that it looks like it came from an ISP?

I don't want to to come from my email address, but is there a way to set up an auto reply similar to an out of office email that outlook can send? Just something to tell a sender that the email is not wanted, undeliverable, or invalid.

I have a similar situation to the original feed:
I am in receipt of emails from a sender who persists in sending me emails regardless of my not wanting them. Is there a way that I can block this sender and have the emails he sends bounced back to him as undeliverable?

Same answer as to the original post back in 2015 - have your ISP do it. There is no way you can (from your end) block and return the mail as undeliverable. That can only be accomplished by your ISP.

Or, if they happen to have an old bootable SL or Lion OS system setup they could use, the later old Mail.app up to and including v. 5.x I believe had a "bounce" option, as did good old Eudora, but they'd need SL 10.6.x w/ Rosetta as the latest to use that.

Or they could use a google search:
https://www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=mac+bounce+email&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8

and come up with some suggested hits like:
http://oregontechsupport.com/articles/osx-mail-bounce.php

And I don't think this is the place for suggesting methods to spoof their email details to return such messages as: undeliverable; this account does not exist etc. type stuff. Again, google could be their friend if that's the path they want to go…

But the subject just says "Block unwanted email sender", and a simple Mail.app Filter/Rule can easily do that with a "move to Trash and delete" one-step operation. Never see any such email from the sender again. Simple.
