The last several months I've been trying to use Firefox as my default browser. I had exported my bookmarks from safari to FF. Just can't get used to FF...So today decided to go back to Safari.
A lot of the bookmarks I had in FF are the same ones that I had in safari, obviously. But since using Firefox I have created more bookmarks.

i try to import bookmarks from FF into Safari...... it's seem to run for about 15-20 minutes and still nothing was happening ....I thought maybe it was hung up .....so I did a shut down and started my MacBook up again.

i have set safari as default on all my devices.

conundrum is....
1. does it take a long time for bookmarks to import?
2. will importing bookmarks from FF duplicate the existing ones.
3. how can i ensure that new bookmarks saved in FF will get imported to safari.
4.how to import bookmarks from FF to safari on iphone & ipad?
or does this happen auto once i set safari as default browser?

I have not used Safari for a long time or imported bookmarks from Firefox, but in general:
1. Unless Safari has an specific option to import bookmarks from Firefox, you usually need to export the bookmarks from your current browser as an .html file and then import that .html file to your new browser.

I have a ton of bookmarks in Firefox - just exported them which took something like three or four seconds on my old 2012 Mini.
My bookmark.html file is 6.3 MB
If it takes longer than say 10 or 15 seconds things are not working the way they should.

Not exactly sure what procedure you were following to export FF bookmarks to Safari. Maybe check this out & give it a try if it's a different procedure:

thanks that helped. I had not created a html file. I have now.

the issue is .... the many bookmarks in the FF exported html file will be the same as the ones already in Safari. as I had copied safari bookmarks when trying out FF!

so will these be duplicated or is my Mac smart enough to know they are the same and only copy one??
ask? do I want to keep delete or replace?

It will do that anyway, so you don't really need to do it, but the result should be the same.

The help menu in Safari gives you these options:

Import bookmarks, history, and passwords from other browsers in Safari on Mac
If Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox is your default browser, you can automatically import your bookmarks, history, and passwords when you first start using Safari, or manually import them later.

You can also import bookmarks that were exported in HTML format from Safari, Microsoft Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator, OmniWeb, Mozilla Firefox, and Google Chrome.

  • Imported bookmarks appear after your existing bookmarks.
  • Imported history appears with your existing history.
  • Imported passwords go into your iCloud Keychain, so you can autofill login information on websites.

Automatically import items from Chrome or Firefox
  1. Open the Safari app

    on your Mac.
If this is the first time you’ve opened Safari after using Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox, a message at the bottom of the start page asks you if you want to keep imported items.
  2. Select an option:
    • Keep your imported items: Safari keeps your imported bookmarks, history, and passwords from Chrome and Firefox.
    • Remove your imported items: Safari removes your imported items.
    • Decide later: Return to the start page and import the items at another time. To see the start page, choose Bookmarks > Show Start Page.
Manually import items from Chrome or Firefox
  1. In the Safari app
    4236b540374dd23e0ba9e00d84f328ac.png
on your Mac, choose File > Import From > Google Chrome or File > Import From > Firefox.
You can do this any time after you start using Safari, even if you imported items already.
You must have Chrome or Firefox installed on your Mac to import.
  2. Select the items you want to import.
  3. Click Import.
Import a bookmarks file
  1. In the Safari app
    4236b540374dd23e0ba9e00d84f328ac.png
on your Mac, choose File > Import From > Bookmarks HTML File.
  2. Select the file you want to import.
After you import bookmarks, they appear at the bottom of the sidebar in a new folder whose name begins with “Imported” and ends with the date.
  3. Click Import.
Export bookmarks
  1. In the Safari app
    4236b540374dd23e0ba9e00d84f328ac.png
on your Mac, choose File > Export Bookmarks.
The exported file is named “Safari Bookmarks.html.”
  2. To use the exported bookmarks in another browser, import the file named “Safari Bookmarks.html.”

rats!! can I create a new folder with different name so they will all go there? then at least at some point I can sort the rest out.

Do you even need any of the existing bookmarks in Safari if you previously exported all the Safari bookmarks to Firefox?

Maybe:
Save the Safari bookmarks asan .html file as a backup.

Then set up Safari as a brand new browser and import the bookmarks, history etc. from Firefox.

thnx..... I just found out that I can sort my urls... so after I import html bookmarks... I can do a sort and delete the dups. sounds logical.

tho save html as backup... have not done that at all. so this will copy all and not only book marks.. as well as reading lists??

how do I set up safari as a brand-new browser. do I delete the one I have??

Im assuming I cannot just import FF html bookmarks to a newly named bookmark folder in Safari!!

well I tried the import FF html into safari and at first I didn't think it worked but then at bottom of list.. I see it created its own folder with date. great! yeah....

I tried the sort option and that works well also.
now I will have to drag some folders from the new folder from FF imports to my regular lineup and then do a sort.

seems like a lot of work...but I do keep a lot of bookmarks...tho some may be redundant now. will go thru all and see if I can pare some out!!
