Just recently due to security considerations I wondered if it might be a good idea to stop using my gmail address for my Apple ID. It's the first and oldest email address I own and of course it's been listed in multiple security breaches over the years.

So, I got to wondering if I shouldn't have a dedicated email address with Apple for my ID, one that I don't use for anything else.

From what I have read it's easy enough to change the primary email address associated with my Apple ID on any trusted device but first I have to have one to change to.

So how do I go about creating a new Apple email address or is it part of the same process?

I realise I'm going to have to do a lot of signing out and signing back in.

Hi Rod

How to change your Apple ID email address:

Have you considered another, or additional, option?

If you have Apple iCloud+ (ie you have purchased additional iCloud storage), you can create up to 3 what Apple calls email aliases.

Although these were offered as temporary aliases for once-only registration etc; you can keep them as long as you like. I use two such email addresses and have used them for several years. As the name suggests, they are linked to your iCloud account and are delivered to your Mac, iPhone etc in the normal way.

Would that suit your needs?

I changed mine not long ago, however because my iCloud email was newly created, I had to wait 30 days before I could use it as my Apple ID.

Ian, in the context of the KrebsOnSecurity report I dont think an alias is of any use, I actually already have one of those but it does not change my primary Apple ID email address.

Jimmysb, I think I did read something about the 30 day wait so my plan is to create a new @icloud.com email address and just leave it sit for a month before considering making the change. I might even leave it until we return to Australia in June as I have more access to support there should I require it.
