I have just bought a 2020 Macbook Pro M1 and have migrated my old settings over. Since then I can connect to any wifi in the area (for example our home one, my iphone, my ipad and an external wifi) yet once connected my macbook will not access the internet. I have messed with the settings, renewed my DCHP lease as someone suggested but to no avail.

I want to do a factory reset however you need internet to do so.

I have tried reinstalling the OS (Sonoma) and this gave me internet access for approx 10 seconds then it went again.

I am not using a VPN (I have one installed i have always used however it does not work anyway as i cant connect to the internet).

Does anyone have any ideas as I have tried everything i know?

thnaks in advance for any help.

Have you tried opening your System Settings -> Network -> Assist Me -> and go through Diagnostics and check-out all the Assistant... Steps and all the Set up areas.

And don't forget to reboot your Mac.

Have you rebooted the router?

Hi guys yes first thing i did was reboot the router after rebooting the macbook, also checked the router was up to date (its a virgin media 1gb superhub 4).

i ran through the diagnostic, it stated may be a DCHP lease problem which i renewed however this still did not work.

Just to be sure, check you have quite your VPN (some block all traffic when just disconnected) then go to WiFi Settings from the wifi icon on the Menu Bar and create a "New Location" from the pull down menu at the top. Give it any name like "Home 2" or something, then "Apply" changes and try again on your preferred WiFi network.

For some reason this simple change often works especially if settings are inherited from another device.

Aha, another migrated item I presume. Glad to hear it's all up and running again.

This is one of the primary reasons that I don't 1) install anti-virus malware, 2) migrate from one machine to another. I always setup a new machine and only install what I need today as opposed what I installed back then but no longer use today.

All documents are stored in a way/location to easily come over to the new machine.

Makes the entire process so much more pleasant without any random baggage.

HI guys I have finally figured it out, i had an old Trend Micro extension which had been enabled,

I'm glad you found the solution to your problem but I am rather surprised that you actually had such an AV extension installed considering the number of warnings some Guru members have warned users of the troubles they can cause on a Mac.

I trust you have removed it completely on your new Mac and avoid further problems and help requests that it might cause. 😉

I'm surprised that it got enabled after the Mac user migration if that is the case as to what actually happened.

Oh well, hopefully, your problem is now solved.

I too never migrate from the older installation when I update my macOS, Lean and clean is best. Have just done this to an older MBP I travel with, and most importantly check my phones hot spot is accessible, including via a usb-c to lightning cable, and all photography apps I use are functioning as this weekend I'll be away and shooting lots of RAW images over 2 days.

This talk of not using the Migration Assistant when change machines has me thinking. When I moved from my PC to Mac 18 months ago, I used the MA, to set up the new Mac, but have often wondered what "baggage" was brought across, and if a clean install would tidy things up. I have my own data files nicely organised, so saving them elsewhere would not be a problem, passwords are in keychain, so no issues there, and I know what apps I have. It would take a little time, but are the benefits worth it.
