Since the Mojave update, I cannot remove the desktop folder from the Finder sidebar. Going to Preferences>Sidebar and unticking Desktop works for a few hours, but always comes back, and also after a reboot. Is there another setting somewhere that is forcing this to come back, or another way to permanently disable this?

Hello - just to be clear from your description above, if you 'untick' the Desktop in the Sidebar menu, the Desktop icon disappears but only temporarily - correct (as in the first pic below)? - my MBPro is upgraded to Mojave but I typically like the Desktop to show in Finder, so hard to explain the behavior - have you tried unticking other items to see if the behavior affects them also? Finally, if not already done, you might want to 'Relaunch' Finder in Apple's Force Quit menu - not sure that would help vs. your reboot? Good luck and let us know if you find a solution. Dave :)

It's not Mojave, it worked for me just now and survived a Force Quit/Restart of Finder. I didn't give it hours, but a restart didn't bring it back, either.

Yes your description is correct. Other items behave as expected. Relaunching or force quitting doesn't solve the issue. Will keep experimenting, thanks!

In System Preferences > iCloud, do you sync your Desktop and Documents folders? If so, uncheck that.

Right-click Desktop in the finder sidebar and then click "Remove from Sidebar." Maybe that will do it permanently instead of going through the Preferences menu.

You can also simply drag the Desktop sidebar shortcut outside the finder window and let go do delete it.
