I have a Canon PIXMA MG3010 Printer that won't scan with my MacBookPro running OS Catalina 10.15.3. The printer will print fine, but when I try to scan, I get an error message "Scanner Reported an Error. A required file is missing or corrupted, or settings are incorrect. Try the installation again."

This printer scanned just fine for about 3 months with my MacBookPro when I purchased the printer in Sept 2019. The error message started occurring about 3 months ago, possibly after the OS was upgraded to Catalina 10.15.3, although I am not entirely sure.

I have deleted and reinstalled the printer about six times, but it does not fix the issue, so I am inclined to think it is an Apple OS file the message is referring to. By the way, the printer will scan just fine when connected to a Windows 10 computer.

Any idea on what file is missing or corrupted, and how to fix it?

With my AIO find it will not scan using the printer menu. Have to go into Applications and open Scan Utility and run from the iMac.

I tried from Applications and got a specifically Canon driver error message. So I will try contacting Canon and see what happens. Thank you.

Your MG3010's current driver is apparently not compatible with Catalina, and Canon does not offer a Catalina compatible driver:

Canon PIXMA MG3010 Driver Download - Software Update

Your choices are to fall back to Mojave:
Revert your Mac to a previous macOS version - Apple Support

Or to purchase a third party (commercial) driver that will work with your MG3010. e.g.

Exactscan Pro
ExactScan - High Speed Document Scanning

Vue-Scan
VueScan Scanner Software for macOS Catalina, Windows 10, and Linux

(I haven't checked to see if either of the above are specifically compatible with your MG3010.)

@Imdean I suggest downloading the current version of VueScan and giving it a try.If I remember correctly the free trial version is fully functional for long enough to make sure that it meets your needs.

Edit: I just noticed that both programs have trial versions. The ExactScan trial is 14 days.

Just a tip...

VueScan is biased towards those who print graphics. ExactScan is biased towards business users.

Good catch Randy. I originally looked at VueScan for that reason. I haven't used it in a while because I don't sscan as many graphics as I used to but that may change. ExactScan looks interesting though. Especially if I start doing more stuff that needs OCR.

A long shot but several years ago I could not get my Canon 9000F scanner to work following an Apple 'upgrade'. Canon support in UK and US were useless but I eventually found a driver that worked on one of their Far East support sites. Might be worth a try. I did point out the Canon UK what I'd discovered but they didn't seem too bothered.

Thank you, Randy & Sawday. I tried downloading ExactScan but could not get it to work. I have sent a message to Canon support through their website, but no response likely until Monday. I am a bit reluctant to go back to Mojave, but I might have to. I will look at other Canon sites, as I purchased the printer in Mexico.

Randy. I downloaded VueScan and it works!!!!. It worked in the trial edition, and I paid $19.95 for the Standard edition. I am only scanning documents (tax receipts, etc.), but it works fine. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

That's good news. Thanks for posting back and letting us know the result. This might help someone else with a similar issue.

On the up side VueScan has been around for some time and seems to have a good reputation for staying current with OS changes.

Any chance that Image Capture.app might still work for scanning???

It might just be worth a try.

Patrick. I tried clicking on ImageCapture.app but it gives the same error message: "A required file is missing or corrupted, or settings are incorrect. Try the installation again." But see above. I solved the problem by installing the Vue Scan app.

I wonder if Apple have ever considered making their own printers, which would keep up with the constant OS updates. Would be fascinating to see what streamlining Apple could develop in printer design away from the clunky models.

I doubt it... not enough money involved that they could earn...

It fascinates me how they are able to screw up so many printers/scanners etc. with an macOS Upgrade.

Nothing new there Patrick. Printer and scanner manufacturers prioritize their drivers for Windows, not the Mac. Even very old ancient printers continue to work in Windows but long ago abandoned for the Mac.

Actually I'm surprised my HP 1012 LaserJet still works with Catalina considering it's close to 15 years old. :)

Patrick, Apple is not unique in that capability. MS did that to me several times. But it's not Apple or MS that is the culprit, it's the printer manufacturers who don't want you to keep using old printers, so they slow-roll updates to drivers for older devices.
