Please can someone help me with this error message I am getting when trying to save a newly adjusted file on MS Excel for Mac?

You do not have permission to save files to this location.

Thanks in anticipation,

John

You haven't given us a lot to go on, but one thing that comes to mind is that in recent versions of the Mac OS, if you try to save things to the top level of your hard drive, you need elevated permission to do so.

Try saving your spreadsheet to your Documents folder and see what happens.

Thanks Randy,
I tried that before.
I am using a brand new MacbookPro M1 (Monterey 2.2) and this didn't happen when I saved a different spreadsheet to the same destination (Desktop or Documents) I can't see any difference in this particular Excel spreadsheet so am completely flummoxed (is that a real word?)

I would try opening a blank spreadsheet, then copy and paste everything into it (including formatting) from the one that won't let you save it. Save this with a new name, then delete the first one. Copy the new one into the folder, and change the name to match the original filename. Open it and make a change, then save it. If that works, delete the one left behind that you copied into this folder.

Hi John

Try this:

Locate the File. Then Click to highlight it. Then use the keyboard shortcut Command plus i.

This will bring up all the info regarding that file and at the bottom you will see "Sharing &Permissions". You might need to open the disclosure arrowhead to see it, but it usually shows up automatically.

Tell us what you see under Name and Privilege. Depending on what these show, we can advise on what to do next.

BTW In "General" at the top it will tell what "Kind" of file it is and further down will be Name & Extension and lower still "Open with....."

Hi John,

Usually this occurs when you have been sent an Excel file that somebody else created. I just rename it and use .ods format as I use LibreOffice.

Thanks Ian,

It shows: John Mears: Read & Write.
Staff: Read only.
Everyone: Read only.

Kind: Microsoft Excel Workbook (.xlsx)
Name and Extension: 5 Ascension Mews,31/01/2022.xlsx.
Open With: Microsoft Excel (default)

However, I think I have fixed it now although not 100% sure until I change it again.

If it isn't fixed, you may be able to fix it with:

Permissions Reset (free)
Permissions Reset 2
Thanks Randy I'll download that anyway for future use.
