Can't update iTunes with High Sierra 10.13.5?

Just got a new iPhone XR, and it gives me a connection error when I attempt to open it in iTunes (version 12.7.3.46). I read online I need a minimum of version 12.8 for it to recognize the XR, but can't seem to find a way to actually DO this. Will my computer even support an upgrade, and if so, how?

Assuming the computer you are talking about is the 2015 iMac, then yes, it should support Catalina and the latest version of iTunes. If it's the 2010 MBP, then no, High Sierra is the latest version it will support. High Sierra 10.13.6 is the newest update that you can get from the Software Update in Sys Prefs (not the App Store).

iTunes 12.8.x supported Yosemite, so it should definitely work on High Sierra. Have you gone to the App Store and Update section to see if you can find the update?

I can confirm what Moderator Ashwin said.

My older iMac runs macOS High Sierra (10.13.6) and iTunes 12.8.2.3 - and recognises, and syncs with, iPhone X and iPhone 11 Pro.

The .6 update to High Sierra has been available for a very long time and, as suggested, you should download this update via the App Store > Updates (top of App Store window, far right).

Was able to find an update in the App store, even though nothing was showing up under "Check for Updates." Only problem now is that iTunes was replaced with Apple Music. Onto another post with that question. Thank you!

If you are on macOS High Sierra - as you talked about throughout this thread - you cannot have converted from "iTunes" app to the "Music" app.

What you call "Apple Music", is an initially free (then $9.99/month after 3 months) Apple subscription service. You can reject the offer.

It's very important to recognise the difference between the "Music app" which replaced iTunes only in Catalina, from "Apple Music" which sits alongside either "iTunes app" or "Music app" as a subscription add on.

Bottom line - either you Upgraded to macOS Catalina unintentionally; or you updated macOS High Sierra in which case iTunes remains.

The OP shows that their iMac is on Catalina so probably does have the 'Music App' as well as the 'Apple Music' offer.

Shows:
2015 iMac: 27" screen / 4 GHz i7 / 1 TB fusion drive / 16GB / AMD Radeon R9 M390 2048 MB / Mac OS X Catalina 10.15.2

HI Steve

Yes; but the OP said in post #1 that they had a problem with iTunes and macOS High Sierra - 10.13.5 and was advised to update to 10.13.6 and then update iTunes. This must have been on the older of the two iMacs, I suppose.

Since then the OP has opened another thread where it appears that they upgraded to macOS Catalina - indeed it was similarly implied above in post #4.

I'm only going on the first post here and the new thread opened today by the OP. In the new thread, there was clear confusion between iTunes app, Music app, iTunes Match and Apple Music offer.

I'll try to find the new thread for you.

Thanks for your help and interest.

Ian

Good spot, on a second look I notice the OP's specs don't match his question. I'd have thought the MBP from 2010 is stuck at High Sierra so no issues with Catalina!

Cheers
