Thank you for your quick reply.. but as stated in my original post I have tried this.. been there done that.. on that site and when I get to the App Store page even though my OS is later than 10.6.6 as required only the App Store symbol appears and it stops there.. no action on anything..

I did manage to download Yosemite but on attempting install it said I needed 10.10 before it could be done..

Can another apple user download it for me and send it to me..? just a thought.. Thanks..

Do you have an Apple ID account?

Where are you trying to download Yosemite from? Are you 100% sure you have not downloaded an update of Yosemite and not the original operating system? An update to Yosemite would sure tell you that message.

You can download Yosemite from the App Store via this link BUT you must have an Apple ID connected to your current email address.

BTW: That MacBookPro7,1 you have is classed as a mid-2010 model:
https://everymac.com/systems/apple/...-2.66-aluminum-13-mid-2010-unibody-specs.html

PS: AFAIK, one needs to have OS X 10.6.8 fully updated to have the App Store work. Double check you're up to date using SL Software Update.

Otherwise you'll probably need the help of a good Apple Tech to help you get updated, or maybe a good neighbor. :Smirk:

But you do have to read the site provided carefully and you shouh be downloading El Capatain at the site:
https://itunes.apple.com/app/os-x-el-capitan/id1147835434?mt=12

Is it not working??? Is the "Get" button available to you?

If the Mac App Store, is not loading, then you have other issues. Apple prefers WPA2 security for a home network to connect with Apple servers, do you know your home network setup configuration?

Also, as Patrick mentioned, your Mac OS X version (10.6), needs to be totally updated (to 10.6.8) as much as Software Update will let you.

Thanks again.. Yes we have WPA2 secure home network.. Yes we have run software update and it reports fully updated to 10.6.8.. and I found I do already have an Apple Store ID and pasword (for iTunes). However when I get to the App Store from the OS download link as for El Capitan there is no working hot spot providing for log in or ID input just a grey/gold window with the A logo and none of the action buttons on the top of the window work.. Thanks for your patience on this..

What if I just go to iTunes.. Can I get to the OS download page..?

Thanks so much to everyone..

Thanks.. Yes just going to that site now.. At last I found the log in pop op screen from the 'Store' command.. entered my ID and Pwd and that was about 5 mins ago.. the activity circle is still going round.. but I appreciate that must be a different/local problem. But this looks hopefull now.. thanks again..

Ok I finally got to open my account in App Store.. but not using the link for OS x El Capitan.. However I could not find where to get OS X El Capitan via the search function.. all I get is the 'learn' stuff and videos about it.. I'll have another go with the link.. I don't know why this is so bloody difficult.. sorry.

Apple won't have a regular El Capitan link up in the store. Once Sierra was released they pulled the El Capitan link. from the store page. They've done that for the last several releases. Once the new version of the OS comes out, links to previous versions are removed from the store.

At last got to the link site for OS X El Capitan.. with the [Get Get] box.. why two Get's I don't know.. I press it.. and..
I am asked to upgrade my security.. three questions and all that stuff.. so I try.. and..
I get past the questions and last of all to be requested to put in a 'rescue' email address.. fine.. I use me husbands email.. but..
It then tells me that address in "in use" and "your answers must be longer".. I give up..

Thanks

Done all that.. Got to the [get get] box but it seems Apple insist I update my security.. but will not let me put in a 'rescue' email address of any description.. whatever I put is according to Apple [already in use] which is WRONG..

What am I doing wrong here..!!!!!

Give your Apple Customer Support folks a call to help you around some of their strange loops and conditions and provide a solution for you.

I have no idea as to why or what "a 'rescue' email address" is or for. Another Apple quirk or strangeness perhaps???

I think that Apple is using the idea of rescue email addresses in the same way that some other companies use them. If you contact them for things like password changes the rescue address is another point of contact if you cannot, for whatever reason, access your primary email account. In theory things like password reset instructions, verification codes, etc. can be sent to that second address with reasonable certainty that it is, in fact, you requesting the change.

No reply yet from Apple feedback.. re-tried getting El Capitain from your link.. which opens and I sign in to App Store but it does not allow me to download.. Until I complete the 'apparently' 'optional' (three question) security enhancement.. which always responds..
[The rescue email address specified is already in use.] and that's it no matter what email I use..

Happy to pay the postage and inconvenience if anyone could get both El Capitan and Sierra on a CD and post it to me..(Australia)..
