I have a 2011 Macbook pro, doing my first CCC backup. I have a 1TB USB 2.0 plugged directly into the USB port and it is so. ****. Slow.
It's been running for 11.5 hours and has cloned 8g. My laptop has 188g of 318g available, so it's far from full. At this rate it will take over A WEEK. What can I do to speed this up???
My only ports are USB 2.0 and Firewire 2

USB 2.0 is very slow, not really meant for large, quick data transfers.
Nothing you can really do to speed up USB 2.0

With your Mac, you need to use either the FW800 port or the TB port and connect that to a 'fast" external drive for backups and clones.
What is the 1TB USB 2.0 external product?
Is it one unit or can you remove the drive and place it into a different enclosure?

PS: To give you an idea about the time for a clone.
I just did one using USB 3.0 .... 500GB from a MacBook Air with an SSD to an externalUSB 3.0 spinner drive took 1.5 hours.
Mac Firewire 800 port to a Firewire 800 external used to take about 3 to 4 hours.

For reference, this is how fast each type of interface is (theoretically, in practice they are much slower):

USB 2.0 = 480 Mbps (50MBps)
USB 3.0 = 4,800 Mbps (500 MBps) (5 Gbps)
USB 3.1 = 10 Gbps
FireWire 400 = 400 Mbps (40 MBps)
FireWire 800 = 800 Mbps (80 MBps)

8 GB transferred in 11 1/2 hours? That is not normal. I assume you have an HDD inside, not an SSD. This could be a sign that your drive is failing. Or perhaps the external drive.

When I read the OPs post it never clicked for me how slow that really was.

I had a situation like that a few weeks back.
Did a clone using USB 3.0 where the transfer speed shown was much, much less than normal.
I stopped the transfer, unplugged the USB cable, replugged the cable and starte he clone process again. This time all was fine.
Scratched my head a bit wondering what went wrong first time around - an then just stopped wondering.
I would suggest OP try that to see if there is a difference.
