Just in case users were considering using a cloning application for their Mac and not already users of Bombich's Carbon Copy Cloner as I am, you may not be aware of the newly introduced features of CCC 7.

Even if you are a current user you may not have noticed that there is now an iOS CCC app which in conjunction with CCC 7's Diplomat option can backup specific data on your iPhone; CCC Mobile Backup | Bombich Software This is one time payed for iOS app at AU$2.99 on the App Store.
For mine this means you can now have an external backup of "unique" data on your iPhone saved independent of your Mac along side or as well as your regular CCC Mac backup.

As well as this new option there are also a host of changes in CCC 7 to assist setup and make restore simpler; https://support.bombich.com/hc/en-us/articles/20686482705687-What-s-new-in-CCC-7

This will not be for everyone and I'm only posting this as a news update but it is an interesting development which will definitely appeal to some. CCC 7 is also a paid update but users who purchased CCC 6 before Jan 1st 2024 are entitled to a discount.

The disadvantage of backing up my phone to my Mac is that I have to do it by hand, if I want to also back it up to the cloud. (Why doesn't Apple let me back up both places?). But if CCC will do a separate backup, that could solve that issue.

It's quite possible that I am misinterpreting your comment; but just for the record, iPhones will backup/sync to iCloud without your having to do no more than charging the iPhone, say, overnight.

Equally, if you want BU to iCloud at any other time, it involves no more than Settings > Your Name > iCloud > iCloud Backup > Backup Now.

As said, this is simply an alternative and Ian is quite right, my iPhone backs up to iCloud every time I charge it over night. You only need to turn that feature on in Settings. Assuming it is an encrypted backup it will also save "personal data".

What CCC is offering with this added feature is the ability to store some of your iPhone data on an External Hard Drive or even an NAS in tandem with your regular CCC Mac backup. This can also be done wirelessly with CCC just like a backup to your Mac as ferrarr states above.

There are so many ways to backup your iPhone not forgetting that much of your iPhone data will be synced to iCloud anyway even without a deliberate backup such as your contacts, calendars, reminders, music (Music App) and third party apps via the App store.

Some of us, like myself, use iMazing (which can also perform scheduled wireless backups) because for various reasons and features I prefer it to the Apple Finder backup method.

CCC's new offering of iPhone backup is primarily (if not exclusively) for photos and files (unique to the iPhone) in the Files app.
I have not tried these apps yet so as said these new features are going to be perfect for some users but as far as I can see today don't replace an automatic/manual encrypted backup to iCloud/local Mac.

I'd like it to automatically backup to the cloud and to my Mac. I have to select one or the other (sometimes I will select my Mac, tell it to backup, then select the cloud).

Maybe because of this little edition now appearing at the bottom: 😉
