I can not figure this out. Where did they hide the password for accounts? One (I have four) of my gmail accounts show the red circle, as offline, in Mail Preferences > Accounts > Account Information & Server Settings. The other three are fine. I am still receiving emails from this account, but I just tried today to send a couple of emails, but they are still in my Outbox. I can not locate where to go to change the password. Does anyone know where this setting has been hidden? I have checked Mail > Help "change password", but both of those results, were not helpful. Any suggestions will be attempted, I really don't want to have to delete the account then add it back in. This is my personal emailbox for family and friends, going back to Aug 16, 06.

I am using macOS 10.12.6, Mail ver. 10.3 (3273)

Thanks in advance.

I just checked and the ability to change passwords is still located in: Mail, Preferences, Accounts, Server Settings. I think the mistake you're making is that you're clicking on "Account Information" first. If you do that, the Server Settings will not show the password setting. Just follow what I stated above: Mail, Preferences, Accounts, Server Settings, and you'll see the option to key in your password.

Thanks for the reply, but in my Mail>Preferences>Accounts, Server Settings only shows "Outgoing Mail Account" with the dropdown box to choose the outgoing server to use with that account.

I just tried to change a setting on a different account in gmail, and I received their message, "Mail was unable to log in to the SMTP server “smtp.gmail.com” using “OAUTHBEARER” authentication. Verify that your account settings are correct.". I DDG and it brought me here, https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/gmail/-6N6tCvkED8. So it looks like I need to delete the account and add it back in.

Thanks everyone.

Really? When I do that, the pop up window only displays; Description & Name, with fillable boxes for each. No password. Same as in Mail Preferences, no option to change password. I'm not at my Mac mini right now, but I will provide screen shots later today.

Are your logged in as an administrator or standard user?

Curious, Bob, my Mail>Preferences>Accounts>Server Settings has two sections, one for Incoming and one for Outgoing. Both have a password section. The only account that does not have that option is the iCloud, which offers iCloud and two others, and when I click on the current setting "iCloud" A box pops up with "Edit Server List" where the other two servers show up and I can change the password there, too. Are you in an Admin account or Standard? It shouldn't make a difference, it's YOUR account.

Here are the images that show what the Mail Preferences shows for Accounts, Screen Shot 2017-07-26 at 11.19.32 AM.png , Screen Shot 2017-07-26 at 11.21.54 AM.png , Screen Shot 2017-07-26 at 11.22.29 AM.png . The only thing I can think of, is that they were added automagically, through System Preferences > Internet Accounts.

The account is working again, so that's good, I just want to be able to change the password without having to remove the account then add it back. Maybe time for a call with Apple, later today.

Admin account. This is what I see in Internet Accounts for my AOL email account. Like Jake, I do not see a password box for my iCloud account.

Are your Mail accounts POP, or IMAP? As you can see, mine are all IMAP. When you added your accounts, were you able to manually add them, or did Mail do everything for you? When I add the google accounts, I put the email, and password in, then Mail does everything else.

With a quick google search, at least for gmail and some other accounts being used with Apple's recent OS and its Mail.app, its suggested one change the gmail password using webmail and then Mail will get updated.

Seems odd but that's what they said, i.e.:
You need to reset your password in your web browser (Safari) by logging into your account. Once the password is reset, Mail will ask you to enter the password. You might need to create an app-specific password depending on your security settings.

For that and other hits if you need more try this:

It's an IMAP account. When I set the Mail app up, everything was pretty much automated - I just had to put in my address and password, Mail did the rest.

And the reason you don't see the password prompt for iCloud mail is that the security is your iCloud password, which is also changed by a different method. Then once it's changed, the system updates everything to use that new password, including Mail. I am beginning to think that is also how Gmail is approaching it.

@pm-r; Thanks Patrick, that does seem to be the case. I'll just have to do it that way. So it seems like google, is allowed to access Keychain as needed. I will test, if I change my web gmail password and save it to keychain, if I will need to enter my password the next time I access it using Mail?

Thanks also to everyone who helped me figure this out.

PS-I just went and changed my gmail password, and as soon as I opened Mail, I got the "change password" popup window. So, it doesn't look like gmail accesses Keychain, like I thought. I just need to remember to change (& save) the password through the web.

Glad to read that it worked, but I would have thought that IF gmail did use the Keychain Access, its password would have been saved there for one to check.

And if not, it's easy enough to enter it there for safe keeping and in case it was forgotten.

I should have said Mail, doesn't access Keychain, to use the password stored for gmail. That was how I was thinking it worked? Since I used Safari to change the password, it was saved to Keychain, and I assumed Mail used it. I guess I thought all apps could access Keychain, not just Safari.
