I have browsed a number of porn sites before discovering and switching to "Private". However, these sites still populate as I type and it is annoying because I have to hide my screen from people as I type a URL. I have deleted everything and reset Safari and they are still there. It has been something like 6 or 7 months, too, so they apparently don't even expire. This is VERY annoying. Why would Apple let this happen? They know this is a possibility.

I realize that I can delete my account and create another, however, given the software and finicky email accounts I already have installed, that would be a last option.

Any help or suggestions would be useful. Thank you.

First, why are you blaming Apple for your Porn viewing activities? If you want to view Porn switch to another browser such as Chrome which uses "incognito" mode that leaves no viewable traces of browser activity.

Anyway, here's how to clear your Safari browsing activity (note that this will also remove all your bookmark web icons but not the bookmarks themselves.

Use your Finder and go to:

Macintosh HD/Users/your user name/Library/Caches/Metadata/Safari/Bookmarks/

Delete the Bookmarks folder. Then go to:

Macintosh HD/Users/your user name/Library/Caches/Metadata/Safari/History/

Delete the History folder.

Note: Your user Library is hidden by default in Lion, Mountain Lion, and Mavericks. You will have to unhide it first before you can do the above. Do a google search on how to unhide your user library.

There's no need to un hide the user Kibrary. It can be accessed at any time from the "Go" menu by simply holding down the option key.

I've followed the instructions and deleted those two folders but stubbornly when you use the search in the unified bar at the top of the safari window it is still remembering bookmarks and history is there any way of clearing this?
Thanks

Try running Onyx (app). It is very good at deep cleaning cookies and caches. Run it in Automation mode with all boxes ticked.
If yo udecide to use Onyx and haven't downloaded it, make sure you get the right version for your OS.
