Hello
I am using my MacBook Pro 2020 for conferences very often. The lid is always closed and I am using external monitor.
Speakers are working fine but microwave is mute
Someone on another forum told me that MacBook microphone were designed to go on mute when lid is closed. He suggested to use USB microphone
Hence here are my 2 questions:
1. Do you agree about design suggestion?
2. Which microphone would you recommend to buy?
Thanks

It doesn't matter if we agree or disagree with the design, but it makes logical sense to disable things when the lid is closed.

There are too many out there on Amazon to choose from. Grab any USB microphone and you'll be fine.

And normally, you don't have to spend huge big bucks for an expensive microphone and you might want to just try one of the cheap ones to make sure it works the way you want things to work but there shouldn't be any trouble according to several sources:
When in clamshell mode, you can use a wired headphones w/ microphone as well. You can use the Audio Out port of your MacBook Air to connect them. And YES, you can use a USB Microphone as well. The only microphone that does not work in clamshell mode is the MacBook Air's internal microphone.

I noticed the highly recommended, at the time, Logitech USB microphone I bought several years ago for about $30.00 is now selling for over $100 Canadian at Amazon.ca. I would say it is now overpriced and there are many, as mentioned, that one can pick up for a much cheaper price that work just as well if not as well or even better. Don't get suckered into overpriced microphones that don't always work as well as cheap ones.

Folks,
You made a great point
I had the issues with my Macbook Air
Now I have MacBook Pro and I didn’t check yet that it has the same issue with microphone with closed lid.
Based on comments above it sounds like only MacBook Air issue
I have to simply try it
Thanks for heads up

Well .. I think that I misunderstood @pm-r comment.
I tried to use microphone on MacBook Pro but it also stopped working as soon as I closed the lid.
Maybe his reference was that only MacBook Air will stop microphone when lid is closed .. and he mentioned external microphone? I understood that he meant built-in microphone ..

Yes, you misunderstood, why would I mean or suggest using the built-in microphone if that's what you meant when it's known it doesn't work when the lid is closed???

My suggestion was to get an external USB microphone with a note to don't spend an exorbitant amount for some overkill exotic microphone.
