I have a HP Laserjet Pro m201dw which is suppose to be connected directly to my wifi network. Despite numerous attempts, following HP instructions, downloading HP manuals and software, I have NOT been able to do so.

I do not have an access point where my printer is located, next to my iMac which is connected to the network via wifi.

Does anybody have a clear set of steps that I can follow? :(

Assuming your home network is working OK and you are using DHCP and have assigned encryption and password.

As a general rule of thumb for HP WiFi printers, they are discoverable via "Bonjour". HP instructions are a bit confusing on exactly how to do this, however. The way it's supposed to be done is first setup the HP using your USB connection. I believe the HP instructions also will have you enter your network name (SSID) and password. Then when you go to System Preferences, Printers & Scanners, it should show the HPLJ Pro as connected and working. Now comes the part that is not so clear....

Remove the USB cable from the HP. Of course now it will show as no longer connected. Now... go to the System Preferences, Printers & Scanners dialog and press the small + (plus) sign denoting that you want to add a printer. Once you've done that and if all else was done right, the HPLJ Pro should appear as available but with an IP address. You will then have two entries for the HPLJ Pro, one for USB use and the other via WiFi (IP address).

The above is from memory on how to get an HP WiFi printer up and running via Bonjour discovery. I may have missed some steps so be sure to consult the HP instructions.
