Hi Mac Forum,

Could someone please explain why my new external SSD backup device requires a Authentication (entering my User name and password) each time I attempt to copy a file to it? It was reformatted to Mac OS standards with my iMac that it is connected to. My other external ethernet disk drive never has required this. In detail: I have a new external backup device -- a small and transportable 512Gb SSD SATA drive that uses a Thunderbolt connection. My other external backup device is a older 500Gb disk drive model using a Firewire 800 connection. Every time I attempt to copy a file to the new SSD device, the Mac OS requires an Authentication saying: "Modifying "Device Name" requires administrator name and password. To move file, click Authenticate." Then I asked to type in my User Name and Password. This is required with every file transfer attempt. Is there a way to eliminate this action?

Thanks,
Peter

Unless the drive is somehow encrypted or uses special access software, it should not ask for your admin password each time you try to write to it. Try this: Right click on the drive when it's mounted, select "get info". Then at the bottom of the dialog, click on the small lock and enter your password. When the lock opens, select "Ignore ownership". That should do it.

I corrected it! I did as you said, chscag, I right-clicked the SSD device and and opened the SSD device's Get Info window. I saw the the Share Device box was unchecked. I checked the Share Device box and now I can write to the SSD drive without any more Authentication requests. Thank you for you help!
