I have recently been watching my cpu usage with activity monitor because I think it's a bit high and my battery drains quickly, etc. I have recently noticed that when I open my lid from computer sleep the activity monitor shows consistent cpu usage of about 30 - 50% that stops when I start the computer up. Is there an intelligent way for me to find out what my computer is up to when the lid is closed and it is unpowered (when I think it shouldn't be doing anything)?

G'day and welcome to the forums.

Go into Activity Monitor in utilities and see what is recorded as using the power. Using antivirus program at all that scans continually?

Check this kb article related to Power Nap.

It can chew through your battery while sleeping (depending on your model Mac), so if it's an issue for you, turn it off.
