Hi there, hope someone can help me. I just bought a second hand Mac Pro 2009 4,1. Upgraded to El Capitan and Migrated everything from my old mac. Now its frequently crashing and then the fan comes on super loud.

I reinstalled El Capitan and it seemed to work for a while, then happened again. Im at a loss and my clients are getting very angry as Im falling behind on work etc.

Heres the crash report, hope someone can make sense of it pretty please...

I just bought a second hand Mac Pro 2009 4,1. Upgraded to El Capitan and Migrated everything from my old mac. Now its frequently crashing and then the fan comes on super loud.

How long did you use the computer (as you received it)...BEFORE installing El Capitan?

I got excited and updated it as soon as I got it, it had 10.6 on it. My previous Mac was on 10.7 so I thought it would need updating.

Also, my previous mac was crashing frequently, in a similar way. Im wondering if some bad software transferred in the Time Machine migration?

While your previous Mac might also have been crashing, unless you have the logs, you can't make the assumption that it's the same issue. While the crash logs look very similar, the reason for it is important. In your Mac Pro's case, your problem is
panic(cpu 6 caller 0xffffff80117ad38a): "TLB invalidation IPI timeout: " "CPU(s) failed to respond to interrupts, unresponsive CPU

That doesn't bode well for the CPU. One of the likely reasons for this is overheating which causes subtle damage to the CPU and under intensive use, it fails. Thankfully, the Mac Pro has an upgradable CPU so you are not totally up the river without a paddle. Research replacement CPU prices and see what makes sense for you..

Raz0rEdge mentioned exactly what I also was suspecting. You very likely bought a bad computer with an existing hardware issue. if there's any chance of returning/getting your money back...do it!

Re...what'ing it? Not familiar with that term..

Not sure how much you paid for this Mac Pro, but if it was indeed cheap..perhaps there's a reason for it..:)

Do you think Regooing it might help?

I'm not 100% what is meant either. But if you mean replacing the thermal paste on the CPU's...I think that if getting your money back is possible...this is what I would focus on.

If this computer was purchased locally...I would have recommended testing it before purchasing. If this was purchased via the internet (such as eBay)...you should be able to return it.

Yeah thermal paste. Bought it on eBay £300 but locally, just messaged the guy to tell him about the issues.
Such a nightmare!

Thanks for your help guys.

I uninstalled Avast and gave it a good clean inside, and it hasn't crashed since (tempting fate here) been a couple of hours now, previously it was crashing every 10 minutes. Contacted the guy too.

Kernel panics are very random...but a couple hours is pretty long. Maybe that's a positive sign.

Some things I always try to do with a "new to me" (used) computer) are:

- Give it a good looking over (inside & out)...to see if anything is damaged or missing.
- Give the inside a good cleaning...usually with canned/compressed air. This removes any built up fuzz/dirt...and maximizes cooling efficiency.
- Insure good seating of RAM & any expansion cards. Since they can jiggle loose or out of place during transport or shipping.
- Completely erase, reformat, and virgin install of the Mac OS (gets rid of any potential issue's form the previous owner).
- Sometimes replace the thermal paste on the CPU's and GPU's (in case it has dried out).

If there are issues after this (and the computer was supposed to be working 100%)...this is when we may be talking a return (if possible).

- Nick

p.s. Of course the above items depend on the computer model.

Had a look inside, reseated the ram and graphics card and gave the whole thing a good clean. Messaged the guy too about potentially returning it or at least getting a part refund to pay for a replacement CPU. Still no crashes yet, so going to use it as much as possible tonight to see how it holds out. Thanks for all your replies, very much appreciated indeed.

While Avast will definitely take up resources, it shouldn't do so enough to cause the CPU to lock up. Perhaps it's just exasberating a bad symptom of the CPU. You don't need antivirus on a Mac, so uninstall all of those applications and avoid things like CleanMyMac.

Just went again. So pissed off.

Yes...this is what I mean by "random". Usually kernel panics happen quickly (less than 5-10 minutes)...but sometimes it takes longer.:(

Bottom line...return it. If it was a local eBay deal...all the better. Then at least you don't have to deal with the issue of shipping it.

You don't say which specific Mac Pro you bought, but quickly browsing the US eBay, your price is right along the others for sale here. But they are all (presumably) in good working order. CPU upgrades in seem to run about $350 and up depending on what you want. So I'm with Nick here suggesting that you return this clunker back to the seller..

I checked eBay-UK as well. Looks like many of the lower cost 2009 Mac Pro 4,1's are shipping from the United States. Which of course adds a lot of time + shipping cost + maybe VAT. Local prices may be higher...but then you get it faster.

Sounds like this Mac Pro was a clunker (existing issues).:( Return it ASAP. It could be a logic board issue...and that's just too much additional money & time to deal with yourself.

As Acast, whgich distributes malware, is listed first it could well have been the major problem. Do not use AV software on your Mac. Also do not use cleaning utilities such as CleanMyMac or Mackeeper.

Also be aware all those USB hubs could be causing a problem, as well ads the Thunderbolt item. Take it this is a PCI-e card which do not work well for TB or USB3.
