Can someone kindly tell me how to do so in Finder? When I selected the New Folder, etc., it only created folders in the root directory or at the parent level to the current location.

You can drag the new folder you just created at the root level into any folder to make it a sub folder, or alternately, open the folder where you want the new folder and then create a new folder and it should show up in the folder, and you'll have a sub folder in the original folder.

Is this not working for you, and it's pretty standard for any OS X version??

I would have thought it was a no-brainier too but it did not happen the way it should. When I was at a certain folder and selected New Folder, all it gave me was one at the root level or one level up my initial folder, but not a level down. Do I have to change any setting first?

I just purchased the macbook pro for three months and am using the most recent OS X. Did you get any option to create a folder or sub folder when you right-clock?

So I just found that it works today (but not yesterday) and you have to do it through the top menu not right-click. Not sure why it didn't work yesterday! Thx for your comment.

I'm not sure I understand what you're saying, but if the Finder is involved and active, right-click is definitely one of the methods to create a new folder.

If the Finder isn't the frontmost active thing, no new folder option will be available.

I hope that helps.

PS: That's an interesting comment you made — I just purchased the macbook pro for three months...
And then it goes poof…??? ;) :*

No I don't think it is Apple's problem, but just I don't know all the features yet as it is my first time using a Mac. Btw, are you sure you can create a folder with right-click?? Why can't I see that option?

Are you using a mouse or the Trackpad with that MacBook?

And BTW, I'm still using Mavericks.

And if using a mouse, check the System Preferences > Mouse as Apple used to ship all Macs with any mouse set to only left, single click to appease Steve Jobs who hated and tried to disallow two button mice and that right-click feature. Maybe some things haven't changed, or respect or some don't realize that Steve died some time ago.

You'll also discover the scrolling direction setting there, depending on what you call "Natural". ;) :Angry-Tongue:

PS: control + left click is the same as right-click or contextual menus of whatever it's called. Excuse me, I've only been using Macs for 25+ years. ;)

And when it's all setup, the right-click to create a new folder will only work in the Finder and when the mouse pointer is over blank space and not over any file or folder etc.

Yes you can still create a folder with the right-click option. It should be at the top of the list. Make sure the Finder is active when you do that or you may not see the new folder option.

You can tell the Finder is the active program because the menu bar will say Finder in the upper left corner.

I use both trackpad and mouse and am comfortable with how to configure them, indeed I got the same menu when using either one. pm-r, I think you have touched on a very important point that explains the situation: "only work in the Finder and when the mouse pointer is over blank space and not over any file or folder". I followed your instruction and it did give me a diff menu (with the new folder option) when I right-clicked over an empty space. Great that I could use your 25+ years' hands-on experience!!

Slydude, not sure where you referred to by "top of the list"?

pettycash, another option you can use that's helpful if and when list view is being used, and I'm not sure if it wasn't already mentioned, but for an open folder, in it's window, select View (menu) > Customize Toolbar…, and click and drag the "New Folder" icon up onto the window's toolbar.

Then it will be there when needed to use in list view.
