Hey guys, I just got back into D2 (in getting ready for D3 for god knows when) and I have a lot of lag plaguing my game! I tried to check my FPS, but I forgot how to ^^;

I have no idea why, I have a brand new MBP 15' so obviously it has more than enough power to run the blasted thing...

any advice? I am running wirelessly but I am not even 15 feet away from the router. and dont say plug in because it would get in everyone's way!

Please help, I wanna play!

Exactly how are you playing the game? Did you use the latest-available OS X installer? Running the Windows version under Parallels or Fusion? Boot Camp? Or...???????????

I have the latest OS software. I installed D2 Carbon. it works its just that when I play on open GL it is lagy. I looked it up a bit and I found that open GL is more lagy than software but when I changed to software it was still lagy (tho less so than openGL)

I was wondering if anyone knows how to make it non-laggy. Ever since I got this MBP i have had nothing but problems. You would think that a new piece of rotten fecal matter--uh I mean equipment with amazing video cards and ram would be suitable enough to play a 10 year old game flawlessly.

My housemates have PCs that are 2 years old and they have it working fine.

any answers?

Are you SURE you have the latest OS X installer? 1.12a is the latest one... 1.11 apparently had some severe OpenGL issues. It also matters how and in what order you install patches. Per Blizzard:

We now have a Macintosh OS X Native Installer for Diablo II and Lord of Destruction. OS X 10.2+ is required. There are patches available for Diablo II and expansion which will allow them to run as Mac OS X (Carbon) applications. Please download either the patch for the game or the patch for the expansion above then install the Carbon patch. Please do not use an expansion patch on the original game and do not use a patch for the original game on an expansion. That will cause problems when you try to run the game or the expansion.

Also read the comments on VersionTracker's page....

Some people have gotten the Windows version to run flawlessly under Crossover. That may be another option to try.

Cograts on getting D2 to even run, I had the same problem on my intel macbook. The D2 game specifically says it is os 10 compatable. I went out and bought the game for a second time about a month ago and had nothing but problems getting it to run. I looked all over the internet to find a solution and could not find a solid reason. I downloaded carbon and still nothing... I email blizzard and the replied and said that D2 does not run with mac (even though its on the box) and that they were working on fixing the problem but did not know when it would be fixed. Anyways... I had to install windows via bootcamp and install it on xps2... really wish I knew that stuff before I went out and spent $30 on the game

D2 runs fine on my Intel MBP. Try downloading the latest version from Blizzard's online store. They offer it as a complete digital download now if you enter your CD key.

so what i did was this:

bought the game,

installed it.

Patch installed automatically after game was successfully installed. (LoD)

version is indeed 1.12 there is no 'a' after it so does that make a difference?
is there a 1.12 a and a normal 1.12?

also it seems that it works best in software mode. still laggy though.

Maybe there is no way to make it smooth?

this stupid open GL is not working. I dont know if they actually made a patch to fix it.

why is it so hard to be happy?

I would imagine that the "a" is there as part of the version number for a good reason. So yes, you don't have the latest one.

I would just do what Islanti suggested. That sounds like a sure thing and will save a LOT of trouble.

so I cant use that patch on my diablo because when I open it it says that I dont have anything to patch.

:S

I am assuming that means that it is already in v 1.12 (whether it is a or not. Plus, I looked at the versions and it said that there was only 1 version of 1.12 so I think I already have it)

though I have to put my disc in to play...

You mentioned earlier than you bought the game, installed it, and applied the patch. If you would please re-read the page I linked to earlier, there are TWO files needed.... one is an OS X installer that I doubt came with the game. The other is the patch. Did you install using the OS X installer? Did you install as per directed by that page? Did you even READ that page? Did you even try the other advice to simply register your game and re-download the whole game pre-patched from Blizzard?

Yes. I read it. Yes. I downloaded it it from blizzard after. Yes. I read your "helpful link" and no it wasn't helpful at all. It didnt fix my issue. and thanks for being REALLY nice and not belligerent at all.

I decided to install the game myself and see how it works for me, and it seems to perform quite flawlessly here. No lag, nada.

I should point out that the OS X patch does NOT provide compatibility with Intel-based Macs. The code is PowerPC-specific. This means that you and I are running this under Rosetta emulation, and that requires a lot more computing power than an Intel-native app/game would.

That said, I'm surprised your MBP can't handle this like my Mac Pro can. What are your MBP's specs (cpus, RAM amount, etc)?

Just to be sure, here's the correct way to install this:

Insert game CD and wait for it to mount.
Download and run the OS X installer from Blizzard.
Run the 1.12 patch from Blizzard after installation.
