I am actually troubleshooting an issue for a user that recieved a GoToWebinar meeting and when she tried to watch a video it would not work and instead provided a link for Mac users that are not able to view video to download this Flip4Mac. So my question is does everyone that has a Mac have to pay for something that should be standard i think. Anyway need some ideas what i can use that doesnt cost anything and will not cause problems down the line

The Flip4Mac plugin is free (see here). Alternatively, you could use VLC which is not only free but plays just about every media format known to man.

Side note: OS X doesn't support WMV just like Windows doesn't natively support QT playback. 'Tis no different across platforms. ;)

"FaceTime" is Apple's app that's included for this sort of thing. I have not used it too much…so I'm not sure of it will work for this person in their situation. A "FaceTime to FaceTime" connection works well…just not sure how compatible FaceTime is with GoToWebinar.

Any other internet meeting app (such as Flip4Mac)…just like any other alternative app for any task…if it costs money…it much be paid for.

Van, just downloaded the plugin, wants a serial number before it will install.
Seems it's no longer free?

It does? Weird, it was free for the longest time. Maybe an older version is lingering around somewhere?

$5.95 for the Player does not seem too dear after the development that went into it.

Google for "Flip4Mac 3.2" download for some sites that still have it available, it's free and the 3.2.0.16 version still works with OS X 10.9.4 Mavericks for those few times it's actually needed.

Or just pay the keeper for the latest version.

After many years of paying for the licenses needed for Flip4Mac to do its thing, Microsoft decided earlier this year to stop distributing it. It was a very nice gesture of them and Mac users should be appreciative.

Now, sadly, WE have to pay for the licenses to encourage further development of Flip4Mac. As said by HarryB, it's a lousy $6. That wouldn't even cover the cost of a large coffee at Starbucks. Just buy it.

Flip Player is still free - being developed by Telesteam. Only the Pro version is pay ware.

Tom -- "Flip Player" is not the same thing as Flip4Mac. The latter, also previously known as Microsoft Components for QuickTime, was built-in automatic system-wide translation of WMV files so that QuickTime (and things like Safari) could play the files. Flip Player is a standalone player that doesn't work with embedded or web WMV videos at all.

Trust me, Flip4Mac is $6.

Seems like its prob best to just purchase the Flip4Mac but if its for free i would rather that. Its only being used to watch a video from a GoToWebinar meeting. If the 3.2 version is still for free provide the link but if its going to cause problem i will tell the user they have to purchase it. As for using the VLC program it didnt work with the GoToWebinar meeting because when i clicked on the link to view video during GoToWebinar meeting it immediately displayed the message that i would need Flip4Mac. I tried to paste the link of the video into VLC but it still didnt work.

What exactly is the video format? WMV?
Where it says Use Flip4Mac that is a drop down menu. Change it to VLC, see if that works.
It should.
Edit: I do, of course, mean the one that says video, not audio.

Under VCL>File>Open Network if you click on that, and paste the URL/Link into the pop-up box, then you should be able to stream it on VLC. You can do this with YouTube Videos no worries.
I use this all the time.

I know its a bit late for this, but i came here hunting for an older free version of flip4mac, which by the way, does exist. Deakin university still forces their students to use it, so it would be a little unfair for them to have to pay, being uni students and all. Anyway, they have a download link for the last free version. here is the link:

Enjoy

Yes there are still older versions around. Question is, will they work with Mavericks/Yosemite?

If I'm remembering correctly, that version of Flip4Mac does not work in Mavericks or Yosemite as Craig stated. It asks you to upgrade to the pay version. I've still got the older version installed and will have to try again to make sure.

Edit: Well, looks like I'm wrong. It still works but complains that it's out of date and wants to download an update which is pay ware.
