I tried downloading the Garageband sound library which is 16GB, before it was even 5GB into the download it had added 40GB to my “system data” and I can’t get rid of it, I’ve deleted Garageband and the sound library and stuff and I can't get it to go away. Does anyone know a way I can get rid of it without having to format my computer? This is a brand new computer I just got this week and just finished setting up 🙄

You could try to un-install Garage Band, but use something like AppCleaner to do it.That way it should clean out the files associated with GB as well. Then, if that gets your space back, but you want GB but not the library, you can reinstall it. I would suggest a reboot in between each step, to let cache get reset. You can get AppCleaner from here: AppCleaner

Dang that’s a good idea but I already uninstalled it :/

I used a different cleaner called Macube after it was already uninstalled and it didn’t turn up anything huge, cleared out like 1.5GB but no where near the 40 that appeared. It’s just so annoying this is still an issue, I’ve had issues with random bloated system data storage for years and I was hoping they would have done something to fix it by now with the new machines and OS.

Well, it's not that. It is the stuff you needed for the GB Library. Do you have a backup from before you obtained the library? If it is brand new, you could go back to factory with a system reset, then recover from the backup to get back to before the debacle.

You can also use something like Find Any File or EasyFind to search for any file named GarageBand, then delete them all.

It's not stuff I needed for the GarageBand library, those files were only supposed to be 16GB and this added 40GB of system data before that download was even finished, that makes zero sense.

And yeah I might factory reset I was just trying to figure out another solution since I literally just finished getting everything set up on this computer so it's gonna be annoying to do a clean format. I ran CleanMyMac and it cleared out half of it but there's still 20GB hanging around.

Have you done a cold boot? As in, shut it down, power off, wait a few seconds, power back on and boot again? That cleans out some things that don't get cleaned out on a reboot.

I did try that, and it didn't help initially. After running the CleanMyMac it went from 40GB to about 20GB of system data and I still thought that was too high because I thought it should really be less than 10, but I ended up doing a format and resetting everything back up, and after getting everything set back up my system data is back up to 17GB so I guess that's just normal 🤦‍♂️ CleanMyMac did its job and I'm just an idiot I suppose. Sorry for wasting time but I appreciate the suggestions and help!

Be careful with CleanMyMac. It has been known to be too aggressive and deleting important files. It's supposed to be improved now, but I won't have it on my system at all.

Or just add a file size is "greater than xGB" in the search parameter to help narrow down such a large addition.

I must admit I had heard similar things from other forums regarding CleanMyMac, yet others were reporting how well it worked and recommending it. And then I discovered several of my local Mac friends who are well-respected Mac techy users had been using it for sometime very successfully and highly recommended it.

I had some problems a year or so ago and nothing else seemed to be able to fix but I was very careful using it and it fixed all three different problems at different periods of time.

I can see where it could easily be used and act like a wild bull in a china shop if the user was not careful when doing what they told the CleanMyMac software to do without paying any attention to what they were doing.

Just saying, ... Be very careful if and when using it. and tread carefully... 😇

Why would you want to pay $34.95 for CMM when there are other less aggressive programs that do the same thing for free? OnyX is one that is free and there are others.

I will give the developers of CMM credit for their sales push and advertising in magazines and Mac clubs. It does remind me that at one time the developers of MacKeeper did likewise. And we know how all that turned out. (n)

My simple answer is easy, because it worked and the other "free" Mac "fix it" utilities did not. In fact I had some problems with Onyx messing up my OS in its attempt to fix things which it did not do.

Actually I was rather impressed. Not just for one episode but for several.

PS: I have absolutely no connection with the developer or their CleanMyMac software other than being a satisfied user that fixed things as I said that most of the others could not.

I just thought I would relay my experience with the software and as a satisfied paid user.

Should you need to do this in the future, you should use the Recovery Partition to cleanly re-install the System without messing up your applications or user files.
