I purchased this video capture device recently because I got a pretty good deal. As you can see the vendor site clearly implies that the device is Mac compatible. The Amazon product page gives the same impression. Unfortunately that seems not to quite be the case. After installing the included software the best I can get is a few seconds of video. After a few launches the program will not even launch though I don't remember the specific vaguely worded error.

I tried the device using a few iterations (versions) of Sierra and the most recent version of El Capitan and even went old school and ran it under Snow Leopard (10.6.8). The hardware involved has been my '08 MB Pro with 8 GB under El Capitan and Snow Leopard and Late 2015 iMac under Sierra with the same result every time. I have not had success with Windows 10 either but can't test further with that till I get Windows rebuilt.

The device is recognized by either Mac and identified as follows:
Product ID: 0x0408
Vendor ID: 0x05e1 (Syntek Design Technology Inc.)
Version: 0.05
Speed: Up to 480 Mb/sec
Manufacturer: Syntek Semiconductor
Location ID: 0x14340000 / 47
Current Available (mA): 500
Current Required (mA): 500
Extra Operating Current (mA): 0

Contacted the vendor and after several, what appear to be badly translated from Chines to English e-mails, the best advice I have gotten is try it on another PC. Any suggestions going forward?

Have to admit, that's a great price if it works like it's supposed to. Maybe too good to be true? Anyway, try turning off SIP and give it a run as a test to see what happens. Otherwise, I would be inclined to send it back for a refund. BTW, where are you using it... on your new iMac or the older MBP?

I think I tried turning off SIP but I don't remember for sure. I'll try that tomorrow and see what happens. I tried it on both machines and got the same results.

I bought a different one a while back on a whim because it was dirt cheap. It did not play nice either which is why I got the one mentioned above. Probably won't bother sending it back. It's more a pain than it's worth. I know someone who can probably use it if I can't.

BTW just in case someone thinks of this I tried VLC which apparently recognizes some capture devices. It does not recognize this one.

You're probably right abut getting what you pay for Lisa. My grandfather used to refer to these too good too be true deals as "too much candy for a dime".

I looked at the Elgato device before getting the two I've tried. They have a pretty good reputation for Mac support. I don't have much left to grab on VCR so I thought I'd take a shot at the cheaper ones. Given the total cost of the two I've tried plus allowing for time and frustration I could have bought the Elgato by now.

I took a shot at the current one because it has both the composite and component connections.

@Cradom That may be the case but didn't occur to me until after I purchased it. It certainly doesn't play nice with Windows 10 consistently on Mac unless I have suddenly become a complete Windows idiot. If the Windows software, which as far as I can tell never installed properly in Win 10, is as bad as the Mac software it is total junk all around.

@Cradom Thanks for the suggestion. I actually tried that a few days ago with no success.

I had not thought to try that. I'll give it a try tomorrow and post the results.
