If you're running macOS High Sierra, do this:

Open Safari. Use the Keyboard shortcut Command plus comma to enter Preferences (you can also get there by clicking on the Safari icon, top menu bar and from the drop down, choose Preferences)

In Preferences, Click on "Search".

Immediately underneath you will see "Search engine". Alongside is a small box/window with your current search engine shown (probably Google). Click on the exposure arrowheads and you can choose from:

Google
Yahoo
Bing
DuckDuckGo

Click on DuckDuckGo and that's it. No need to download anything. Already built into HS.

Privacy Essentials is a browser extension and if that's something you want, you can just switch over to a browser like Brave or Vivaldi which has security built-in.

Being a number of OS releases back, you're going to continually run into situations where an app you want to use is going to require a newer version of OS.

Duck Duck Go is a search engine...

There is also a DuckDuckGo Web browser for the Macintosh:

It is based on the same source code as Google's Chrome, just like Brave.

Given the choice, I'd much rather use Brave:

However, since both are free, and having more than one browser on your Mac doesn't create any sort of conflicts, one can just download and try both and decide which they like better.

RestorePrivacy prefers Brave over DuckDuckGo:

Correct, your machine is old and obsolete at this point. Most apps require Catalina or so as the base.

There are many secure browsers out there, so grab one that works for you and use DuckDuckGo as your search engine..

Thanks but I need a more recent OS to use Duck as a search engine. It does not work with OS 10.13.6. I don't need a browser..

The search engine has nothing to do with your OS. As long as you have a browser that's working, you can use DuckDuckGo as your search engine within the browser setting or going to the site directly at DuckDuckGo — Privacy, simplified.

Also indicate what browser you are using.

Many thanks, that's right. DuckDuckGo works perfectly with OS 10.13 and Safari 13.1.2

If, like mine, your machine is a 2011 Mac, you can in fact go past HS to Catalina by using 'patch builds', for example this one: macOS Catalina Patcher - there are some issues, particularly with some graphics requirements, but by and large you get most of what Catalina has to offer.

However, you can already use DuckDuckGo as a search engine in any browser - you don't need their browser (which is what you've tried and failed to get).

Thanks for that, I also have a 2011 MacBook floundering on HS in Bali. I'll give that link a try on my return.👍🏼

you can use DDG in your browser even as far back as Snow Leopard.
