Hello, maybe somebody can help me because I can't figure this out.

I often text myself messages that I want to check out. I sometimes message myself from my iPhone or from my Mac. The result is that I get a duplicate message though. This didn't happen before but one day it started happening and I can't figure out how to fix it.

I have attached a quick screen capture video below showing exactly what happens. From the looks of it, it may be related to iCloud since there is a short delay between the first and duplicate message, but i have searched and searched and can not find anything that turns this off.

If you have 20 seconds to look at this video and help I would greatly appreciate ==> Messages

Thank you

I would expect two copies. One on the "Sent" side of the messages window, and one on the "received" side. After all, you DID send it and DID receive it. That's how it works.

It did not always do that though. If that's how it works then I can deal with it, but for sure that's not how it always worked.

Thank you

...or you could use an app that's designed for this..like Notes, Reminders or the countless other apps out there.

If you have iCloud sync enabled, those notes will be available across all of your devices..

Like you, Ashwin, I use Reminders to hold temporary things, Notes for longer term stuff and even occasionally email myself longer reminders.

Curiously, though, I just tested Messages, and Messaging to my own account didn't result the duplicate this time. Something strange going on, it's always been a dupe before.

I get "duplicates" here also. And I would expect to. If one is NOT getting duplicates, I would think that would be a problem. How else would you know it went through?

Well, it does show "Delivered" for status on my iPhone and Mac, but it's not actually appearing in the left side, where incoming messages appear. It is syncing from Mac to iPhone and iPad, but all on the right, "sent," side of the column. What the OP is showing is the sent message reappearing on the received side.

@wally247, what address are you using for the Messages? Your telephone number, iCloud email, AppleID? Something else?

Yes. What the OP gets is what I get. And what I'd expect. Now somewhat oddly.... I did the test on my MBA. The "received" message on the left is higher, like it came before the "sent" message on the right. On my iPhone, it's the other way around.

EDIT: the use of phone number vs AppleID was a thought I had also. For me... I'm using phone number. That was the default fill-in.

EDIT 2: AHAAAA! So I changed the default for new conversations from phone number to AppleID on both my MBA and iPhone. Sent new message from MBA to AppleID. Only shows up once on the MBA... shows TWICE on the iPhone! And on the MBA? I get a prompt offering to share my name and photo... with myself. LOL!
