Not sure if that's the right way to say it, but I've set up a new account, but if I go to the app store and do an update. It displays a window to log in, with the apple ID username of an old user. How do I get rid of this, and all other instances like this in any apps or actions that require this?

Did you setup the "new account" as a Standard User or Admin user??

It sounds like you did the former and that's the account you're logged into and it's asking for the Admin username and probably their password as well.

Actually it was a new admin account. It's displaying my coworker's appleID, with a blank space for the password. He runs our little business here and he bought a used iMac and wants to sell it. He got everything upgraded that he can, and i'm just doing some cleanup. Can you tell me where i'd find a list of all these user apple Id's (it's the only one, I think) and passwords so whoever buys this will have as clean a machine as possible?

Guys -- let me ask this question if I may -- would it be feasible to use disk utility to erase the hard drive and reinstall el capitan? This imac was bought online from ebay, and had el capitan installed on it by my boss. I've been doing some reading online and it said on the apple website that when one does this it will installed the original operating version of os x that came with the machine.

My question is; When it says the original version of OS X, does that mean the OS that was on the machine when it was bought (if there was an older version that was on it), or does that mean it will recover the original OS that's on the SSD now? (which is El Capitan)? I don't know what version was on it when it was bought, and I've read that Snow Leopard, according to apple, is the oldest version that can be upgraded to El Capitan.

I like this idea becasue then we can give it to the customer and when they turn it on it will be like an off the shelf purchase of a new on, with the welcome screen, etc, so they can set up their machine to their liking, as well as get rid of any additional apps that are on it.

The machine is model number 8,1 core 2 duo processor, 2 GB Ram currently, upgradable to 4 GB Ram. Like I said I'm not sure what os it came with, if indeed it would revert to the OS that it had when it was purchased on Ebay.

JFYI, that iMac 8,1 model came with:
Pre-Installed MacOS: X 10.5.2 (9C2028)

the maximum it can run:
Maximum MacOS: X 10.11.x*

Maybe let your boss or whoever's in charge just download the later OS X installer they got previously and use it, and maybe save it to a USB stick.

Choose your method:
