Since my email provider changed to gmail a lot of my messages are going into a new mailbox called Archive (which I did NOT create) instead of into my Inbox. As a result i have lost some. How can I make them go into the Inbox as they used to? I have a 27" year-old iMac running Mavericks.

How can a email provider change to Gmail ??
Gmail, is a email provider, so is Live Mail, so is Apple .me Mail, so is Yahoo Mail. These are ALL email providers, so for one to be the other is impossible. There seems to be some confusion here.
Anyway, getting away from that, if you have a gmail account from Gmail the email provider, when a email gets Archived, all it is doing, is moving from your inbox, and moving to Archived. You can also see it under all mail.
Archiving your emails, is cleaning up the inbox, so it isn't full of crap, or stuff you want to read later.
have a look at this link, on Gmails, Archiving . . . Be sure to clarify exactly what is happening, and what email Client you are using. A email client, is something like Apple Mail, Outlook, Thunderbird and the likes. . .
As I use a Mac I took it for granted that I'd use Apple Mail! The oerson who set up my new website (astroart.org) also changed my email to gmail. There is no All Mail -- had there been I would not have been confused! Archive to me means something quite different. I have had another reply which explains more, so thanks.

We don't presume anything here. I for one, use a App called AirMail 2, others use ThunderBird, some Outlook, MailForge, MailPilot, Eudora . . and on we go. This is why the question was asked.
Now archive to you is NOT what archive means with Gmail. If you read the link above, Gmail explained what it means.
I find it hard that you don't have a All Mail, because as you see below, from my Mac and iPad, I have a Gmail (All Mail) and it has 800+ Emails in there.

Now if all that fails, then ring or email the person that set this all up for you and ask them. This isn't a Mac Mail, or Mac problem, its the fault of the Web Provider and maybe Gmail, but it should be there. . .

The company that set up my new website also moved my email to Google, but I'm sure they did not change anything within Mail on my iMac. What I have is quite different from what you posted, but I don't know how to post a screenshot. The list reads, vertically: Inbox, VIPs, Flagged, Sent, Junk, Trash, Archive. That's it. What is a Labels list -- I don't have one? I suppose it's in the web version.
I used to use Eudora until it became unsupported and creaky, and don't like the 'new' version. Mail was fine until Google took it over. . .

Your Labels List, is all the Labels on the right side. If you look at the top image, i have Legal, Her, ATO, Notes and so on, and under that it says, 'More'. That is where your 'All Mail" should be.
To make sure, sign into the Web Brower for Gmail, and you will see it there. All Gmail accounts I have, have All Mail. . . .

As I thought, you are talking about the web-based Gmail - yes, All Mail is there. I'm talking (as I thought I'd made clear) about Apple Mail, which is as I stated above. It doesn't really matter, now that I know that 'Archive' means 'All Mail' -- just stupid!

I knew what you were talking about, and its been 3yrs since i have opened Mail, so just for you i did, and found out Surprise Surprise, that Archive in Mac Mail is All Mail, as shown in the Image below, and what was stated in the Link I provided above. If only you had of red the Link and looked in your Mac Mail . . .

Sorry! Not my intention to be sarcastic, just stating a fact. I did understand from the start that 'Archive' apparently means 'All Mail' -- it just doesn't make sense. (And it is of course Google that's stupid, not you!) But I can't help it that my Apple Mail DOES say 'Archive' and not 'All Mail', whatever yours says . . .

I am wondering why Apple Mail is throwing them into the Archive Folder. On OSX Yosemite's email I do have an archive but it's empty.
I know you are not savvy with software, but is your Google Mail using IMAP or POP? I am using POP here and all is fine. If yours is IMAP I will do some checking and get back to you.

Good to know I'm not the only person with this stupid problem (I think). If I could just rename it 'All Mail' it would at least make more sense. I already have a number of folders that I created called 'Archives' which really are for that purpose. . . Thanks.
