I have a HP Color Laser Jet CM1312nfi MFP printer.
I got the error message, " replace cyan cartridge using black only". OK, I replaced the cyan cartridge. Can't clear the error message and the printer will only print in black and white with gray scale for colors.

Need a lot more info !!

What Mac?
What OS?
How are you printing ? Over WiFi? Or Hardwired? AirPrint?
How is the Printer Connected? Wired to Router? Or WiFi?
Have you tried to remove the Printer from Printer Preferences in System Preferences (90% of the time, this fixes issues with Printers)

Have you looked at this page that deals with setup, troubleshooting your printer from the HP Support pages ??

Go through the Troubleshooting, remove and add the printer again, make sure you have the latest Firmware, and OS X Updates for your OS, and if the problem still persists, come back and see if we can't root out the problem, after you have answered the above questions.

I can't speak for the HP Color Laser printers, but the comparable Dell Color Lasers use 4 toner cartridges which can be replaced individually. Unfortunately at $90 each! :$

HP Laser printers are built so that the toner cartridges also have the drum incorporated within. I'm not sure if that makes a difference. Having to replace all the cartridges when one is low would be extremely wasteful.

Have you tried contacting HP technical support to see if they could help with the error. Or maybe their printer forums?
