Would appreciate opinions about this app. I'm using the free version on my iMac. Ran it the other day and the report said no major issues and mentioned a few minor issues, such as orphan files. I have no idea what tan orphan file might be. I only say 'minor' because that's what the report says.

My question is; how reliable is this app, especially the free version?

Very reliable. I have the paid version and it helps to find things that might be contributing to slowdowns, issues, etc. I paid because I wanted to reward the developer for a well done product.

Orphan files are what is left over after you eliminate an application. Typically they are small, do no harm. If you want, after Etrecheck files them, you can delete them. Most are, as I said, really small.

EtreCheck is brilliant in my view. Just endorsing Jake's statements.

I also opted for the paid version earlier this year. I like the app, and have been using it about 6 years. I'm not using it as often as I used to a few years ago.

I really don't think you need to get the Pro version, unless you're having major issues frequently.

I agree with Bob. Unless you feel you need the Pro version, generally the free version offers enough information that you can wade through and cure any problems.

Hmmm...??? For as long as I can remember, Etrecheck Pro has always been available as a FREE application, and I don't really ever remember a non-pro version. But I think maybe the App Store might have provided one but I have no idea if or what Apple might have done to the software, or even if they just renamed it.

Well this is strange. I just did a search for EtreCheck and EtreCheck Pro at the Mac App Store and received a "No Results" for either one.

I wonder if it was removed from the Mac App Store? I know that I downloaded it from the Mac App Store before.

It is available from MacUpdate and their home site.

No longer available from the Mac App Store.

Also while EtreCheck Pro is free, the "Power Package" add on is not.

The EtreCheckPro site seems to imply that the software hasn't been updated in the Mac App Store if it's even still available. ie:
Still using the Mac App Store version of EtreCheck? Upgrade now!

In all the years of using EtreCheck Pro, I had never even noticed or knew that there was an additional commercial add-on available. I wonder if many other users noticed it was available and how many have actually purchased the add-on???
Power User package

Neither did I know it was created by a Canadian development company:
Canadian software development and consulting corporation

For what it's worth, Patrick, I paid for the Power Usage Package - partly because I thought their free product was worthy of some contribution and partly because that extra package gives one the means of "solving" any problems and invites people to ask the Developer for specific step-by-step directions on how to resolve any issues.

The extra cost was, if I recall, around 16USD or thereabouts.

That's reasonable. Is that for a year or a perpetual licence?

Seeing as Windows is too primitive to have a Time Machine function, I forked out for a perpetual Acronis licence.

A one-time payment, I believe.

Ian

Gee, thanks Ian. I'll buy one. Sounds like good value. Certainly worth $AU20.55. If I don't like it, I'll consider the $20 a donation for a pretty good app.

I agree with most of the posts that say EtreCheck is EXTREMELY useful and well worth the price. It can find things that bog down even the most powerful iMac.
