I'm trying to download Onyx for Yosemite and every site I've tried is horribly slow and finally fails, except for filehorse. But I found a comment on the web saying that some software from there comes with spyware. Can any one confirm or deny that? Filehorse is not one of Macs "identified developers".

@JaguarMac I don't remember whether Titanium Software is one of the "identified Developers" or not. Assuming that you get Onyx directly from their site you shouldn't have anything to worry about.

The fact that a developer isn't an"identified developer" doesn't mean there is something wrong with their software. There are a number of reasons legit developers of very good software haven't become identified developers.

I dare say I prefer to get the developers software directly from their site, or supported site, rather a copy from the ahem..."approved" App Store where Apple has stripped some or several features of the software of the same name and don't even mention the fact!!! :(

How very, very odd. Onyx has never been available from the App Store. Go to the developers web site that Dogsbreath kindly provided and download the correct version for your operating system.

With what OYNX does with the OS, Apple wouldn't let it into the Mac App Store. Even stripping some of the features, OYNX would still be going against the MAS rules, as it plays with System files.

Exactly, TatMac.

As for downloads, based on too many dodgy download sites, I'm limiting my recommendations for genuinely safe, secure downloading sites to just three locations:

1. The developer's own site
2. The Mac App Store
3. MacUpdate.com

To the best of my knowledge, there are no other existing safe Mac download sites.

I buy games software from GOG.com and Aspyr for my Mac occasionally and I've never had any problems with them. Steam, too. But perhaps you didn't have games in mind.

True, and sort of oxymoron that it, like other similar utilities can provide a GUI to provide access to some various features, scripts etc. that OS X already has built-in, even if somewhat hidden.

What is your recommendation concerning Onyx? Use it or not?

Many of our members use Onyx with no issues. Be sure to get the right version for your OS. Because it can alter files there's a possibility of problems if one id not careful.

Most of out members use it in automated mode. The help files are also pretty good at explaining what each function does IIRC.

I use Onyx, have for years. Just accept the defaults and automation and you'll be fine. No reason to tinker with Onyx, just run it.

I have used Onyx successfully occasionally over the years, but I will admit that the last time I used it recently with my Mavericks iMac to clear some stubborn cache files etc., my iMac was not behaving as it should or as fast after it had finished. And Console was just going absolutely berserk with entries!!!

I did some googling and one particular rather technical article mentioned that using Onyx can leave some folders not set properly and a suggested solution was to use Mavericks Cache Cleaner( now Yosemite Cache Cleaner):
Yosemite Cache Cleaner for Mac | MacUpdate
http://www.northernsoftworks.com/yosemitecachecleaner.html

I ran the supported Yosemite Cache Cleaner for the same Maintenance on the cache folders, and my iMac started to preform much better, and like it's old self.

So, not knocking Onyx and what it can do, but I think I'll be giving Yosemite Cache Cleaner the first chance from now on, even though it's $10.00usd and Onyx is Free.

But Yosemite Cache Cleaner seemed to run well in un-paid mode just last week. And it seemed to work well, if not better.

Just saying… ;)

It looks like the Yosemite Cache Cleaner besides costing $10.00 has mixed reviews. It mostly does the same things as OnyX only somewhat faster but according to the reviews, no better. And, how often does one really have to run either one of these utilities? I think I'll continue to recommend OnyX and stick with it myself.

What is Best cache cleaner for yosemite? I just found for CCleaner for Mac.
thank you for suggest!!

Read the user comments about it here:

Or maybe have a look at an alternative:

But there's certainly some credit to be given for Jake's suggestion above.

Personally I find I need to shutdown my Mac and then boot up that seems to purge most cache files better than just doing a restart. And sometimes using Clean my Mac.app.

CCleaner is a highly effective app for Windows. I used it for years while running Windows and never had a problem with it. However, (and this is just my personal opinion) like other "cleaning utilities" it should be used with due caution. CCleaner removes not only caches, but also other files.

Like other apps that started out primarily for Windows and then came out as a Mac version, it should be cautiously used and always make a backup first.

It seems to me with so money apps and utilities available these days, that particular caution Warning should be a boilerplate rubber stamp applied to them all.

Even then, I hate to think of the number of times it has been included and mentioned but went unheeded. ?

You might want to re-think MacUpdate. It hasn't been generally considered to be safe for years now.
