I see Flip4Mac on my computer. When I click on it, it says "Your version is out of date", and asks me to upgrade. I didn't do it since the new version seems ask for money.

I don' think I have directly run this program, so why do I have this app? Did it come with the Mac? Can I remove this program?

Is the current older version doing something on my Mac? Am I better off keeping the older version (and not paying for new version) and letting it do whatever it is doing?

Thanks for your help.

(I have searched, but could not get a clear answer.)

Flip4Mac is for playing Windows Media on your Mac. It is up to you if you want to keep it, but suggest you uopdate from System preferences. Upgrade asks to go to the Pro etc and you are correct. Upgrades mean money, updating is free of charge. Current version is 3.2.0.16 as of today. Set it to check weekly.

- If you purchased your computer used...it may have been on it from the previous owner.
- If you purchased the computer brand new...it's not an app that comes with a new computer. Therefore you had to have downloaded it & installed it at some point.;) Of course this may have happened a while ago...and forgot about it.:)

I purchased my computer new, so I must have installed it then.

I went through System Preference, and tried to "Update" it (not "Upgrade"), but that opens a box asking me to Click "Upgrade Now" and get version 3.3.7. Is that a paid option?

Yes, you can remove this program, if you do not need it, you can uninstall it and not have to worry upgrade or update.

Maybe double check with harryb2448 .

Otherwise, just do as Bob suggests and also what I'd support and also suggest.

PS: Maybe have a look and read some recent comments (a google search works well) about Flip4Mac at some sites such as this:

If you have a Time Machine backup and I hasten to say, if not why not? You can safely trash this app and restore it later if you ever need it which I doubt. If you haven't needed to now you probably never will.

Now that's a pretty good and simple summary solution I would say!! :D

Just like a lot of other surplus stuff wasting space on one's boot drive volume.
