Hi everyone! In the last couple of weeks I have noticed a major drop in performance of my Macbook while running certain processes. The problem started occurring 7 weeks ago and is becoming a little worse each day.

7 weeks ago everything was still working perfectly and smooth. I am running the following setup: I have two HP Z24N external monitors connected to my macbook Pro with HDMI (both Displays have separate spaces). I use the Mac Magic keyboard and trackpad which are both connected with Bluetooth. Usually, I have an active Skype session 2 hours a day. However, I started noticing the following performance drops in the last 7 weeks:
  • 7 weeks ago I noticed that my MacBook performance drastically decreases while Skyping with my colleagues
  • 5 weeks ago I noticed that the laptop becomes very slow when connected to both external monitors. Therefore, I decided to unplug one of the two monitors.
  • 3 weeks ago, doing any other tasks on the laptop while Skyping is near to impossible. The laptop becomes extremely hot, therefore I made the decision to join the Skype session with my IPhone instead.
  • 1 week ago, I had to unplug both external monitors. If I connect my MacBook to one of the external monitors for the first three minutes everything is OK. However, after let's say 5 minutes the laptops performance drastically decreases. After about 10 minutes kernal_task(0) (used to prevent the Macbook from overheating) starts to take up > 100% of the CPU. Meaning that even the simplest task are impossible to do on the Macbook.
However, currently I am working on the macbook without Skype and external monitors and everything is (still) working perfectly fine. Could someone give me some insight in what is happening with my laptop? I also created a performance check with the paid EntreCheck application in the AppStore. An important point here is that I made this report without any active Skype sessions and without connecting one of the external monitors, If I would try to do this the MacBook would be too slow to even create the report.

Any advice is highly appreciated. Thanks in advance guys!

For a start, you could try running:

Apple Diagnostics

You also may want to try running your Mac in Safe Mode:

If the problem is no longer present when running your Mac in Safe Mode, it's likely that the problem is that one of your apps or software utilities is dragging down your Mac's performance and that it isn't a hardware issue.
