Hi everyone

I recently bought a new i-Mac via the Apple site in HK (I'm Brit - this is important info, tell why later...)

From time to time, and for no apparent reason, it starts making the 'key stuck down noise'. It can be when I'm mid using it, or in the middle of the night when it's been 'asleep' or any other time and it's driving us nuts.

The reason for sharing my nationality, is yes, you'd think I could return the whole darn thing to Apple and let them sort it but a) i live on an outlying island in HK with ferry-only access so travel anywhere with an imac under my arms isn't so easy (plus we have no Mac store here - yes, go figure...) and b) the help-LINE is not exactly what you'd call helpFUL. My fault entirely, I don't speak Cantonese.

Does anyone know if this is a common problem please and can someone recommend how I fix on my own, or do I really have to brave the tortuous route of a Chinese help line??

Thank you!! :)

Do you have another wireless keyboard stashed away somewhere, upside down, maybe in a cabinet next to or near where your new iMac is positioned?

Why? A post of some months ago mentioned a problem similar to yours, and the solution was eventually stumbled upon. The OP found an old bluetooth keyboard that he no longer used had been stored in a nearby cupboard. Something had tipped it over, and one or more of the keys was depressed by the weight of the whole board above them. Removing the battery from the unused k/board solved the problem.

Does your son use his computer at the same time you're using yours? Your Mac might be picking up his keystroke signals. Try disconnecting his k/b - or tie his hands behind his back  - when you're using your Mac.
