I have to continually go into the preferences sound and keeps checking the above.

Just keep disappearing from the Menu Bar.

Lot of comments about this but no good solutions.

Is there a way to set this to it is always in the Menu Bar.

Just out of curiosity, why do you want the volume control on your menu bar? Don't the volume keys work? I only ask because adjusting the volume with the mouse/trackpad on a visual slider is awkward to say the least.
Anyway, if it will go there but keeps disappearing check these instructions I saved ages ago.

*The setting for Always is in Menu Bar Options > Sound > Always Show

If you don’t enable this option, the volume icon will pop on the screen only when you are actively using it to turn the volume up or down.

Don’t Reopen Windows After Restart

Some users noticed this issue often occurs when you set your Mac to reopen windows after a restart. If you don’t really need macOS to reopen those windows for you, you can disable the option. Next time you click on Restart or Shut Down, uncheck the option that says “Reopen windows when logging back in“, and check if the issue persists.

Do let us know if this helped.

On my old iMac running High Sierra, the Volume Keys are:

F11 for DOWN and F12 for UP

If you get no response, then hold down the fn key, bottom row, far left on your Keyboard whilst using the F11 and F12 keys.

Yep, pretty much the same on mine. F10 for on/off, F11 for down and F12 for up. They are marked that way with a speaker symbol on later devices as well as the Fn number.

Make sure this setting is not ON.

The setting for Always is in Menu Bar Options > Sound > Always Show

Always is not a selection for Sound Menu Bar Options, it is either on or off.

Not that important just wondering why it keeps disappearing from the Menu Bar when selected.

In Settings go to Control Center, it's in there.

Try slowing down your double-click speed on your mouse buttons in case it might be hiding it when clicked somehow. Just a wild thought.

There is no Control Center in Mac High Sierra, at least I can not find it.
And on my High Sierra I see Dock in System Preferences, but I do not see Sound.

For Mac OS High Sierra users, the Apple support page says:

Turn the volume up or down
To change your computer's volume, click the Volume control in the menu bar , then drag the slider to adjust the volume (or use the Control Strip ).

If the Volume control isn't in the menu bar, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Sound. Click Output, then select the “Show volume in menu bar” checkbox.

I have no idea why you are not able to see any Sound preference pane. Are you sure you are running High Sierra???

Yes I am running HS. I just am not as good as I should be finding things there (must be getting old :) ). I looked several times and did not see it, but yes with your encouragement I now do see it is there. (Seperate from Dock which had been mentioned I think (Dock and Sound)).

There is nothing wrong about getting old, especially when compared to those who are not doing so any longer.

And just a thought if your eyes are getting a bit weak as they tend to do as we get older, when using the Mac and you open a window such as your System Preferences, just press the letter of the preference pain thing you are looking for, or start typing its name and it should automatically become highlighted which can save one from looking around everywhere.

Interesting. Thanks!

I have been doing Mac since the early 90s and I don't think I had ever picked up on that one.
