I use Firefox as my browser. Is there a way to get the icon for Firefox to appear in my dock at the bottom of the screen so that I can launch it with a single click?

With any app you want to stay in the dock:

A) Open the app, then while it's in the dock, right click on the icon, go to Options, select Keep in dock.
B) Open Finder - Applications - drag the app icon to the Dock

Note that the icon in/on the Dock is just an Alias/Shortcut. You can drag it off the dock or delete it and it does NOT delete the Application. Just put it back as bobtomay describes.
