How do I get a slideshow to play on my tv?

Is anyone able to help me with getting a slideshow to play on my tv.
I am connecting my Macbook Pro to the tv with a cable, and am able to drag my slideshow onto the tv screen, but the play button is not visible and I have been unsuccessful in getting the slideshow to play. I am able to manually scroll through to the next photo-just cannot get the slideshow to play.
I would very much appreciate any help. Thank you so much.

Firstly, although I am now home in New Zealand, I recently visited Victoria, and had a lovely day looking around, so greetings!
I am not at all techie, so I hope the following is what you need.
MacBook Pro 13" laptop Mid 2012, OSX 10.9.5
Just using the iphoto automatic slideshow function.
(My assumption is, if I could make the slideshow screen stay small when I drag it over to the TV, then I would be able to see the Play button at the bottom and my problem would vanish. Not at all sure if this would be the case though.)

Glad you enjoyed your time here! We love it, though the winters are a bit dreary (though we rarely get any snow).

It sounds as though you have your TV set up to offer an extended desktop (two screens) rather than mirroring. By switching to mirroring and adjusting the resolution to suit the TV, you'd get what you're looking for.

I have changed from extended desktop to mirroring and woooo hoooo!! I am able to play the slideshow, so thank you ever so much for your help!
