My mother recently gave my sister her very new MacBook Pro, but of course the Administrator is Mom. Sister has changed the password, but still refers to my mother's name as the Admin. Is there any way to change that? I've looked everywhere I can think of, including searching here. She's running El Capitan if that matters.

Are you wanting to simply make another account the Administrator account? If so, try the following:

1. Log into the current administrator account.
2. Open the System Preferences and go to the Users & Groups preference pane. If necessary click the padlock and enter an administrator password.
3. Click the + sign and create a new user. Give the user administrator privileges. Now you can close the pane.

I think she wants to change the Adminstrator's name to hers. That's a dangerous move and can cause the loss of data. The Apple KB has instructions on how to do it but I highly recommend that she just create a new Admin as advised by Slydude.

Thanks for the replies, Slydude and chscag. We took the advice and just added a new user with Admin privileges. Didn't know you could do that. All's well.

Glad that solved the problem. It's nice to be able to do that once in a while. I have a second administrator account specifically for troubleshooting. Since it only gets used if I am troubleshooting a problem, it doesn't have a lot of extensions and other junk loading.
