Help please...

I finally got my MacBook Pro backed up.

I also found the original discs that came with it.

I now can wipe it clean and re-install 10.6.4, as I think that was the original OS discs that came with it according to Apple, and then upgrade back to 10.6.8 via the internet.

10.6.8 is the OS that I currently have.

To help with the wiping of my current mac clean, I could surely use a link with screenshots of what to select after I insert the disc (I'm guessing it is the install disc), and it's step by step instructions.

Will I need to also re-install the applications from the applications disc as well, as my recent B/U via Carbon Copy Cloner said I had some files missing from GarageBand. I'm guessing those will be missing when I migrate from the backed-up files from my ext. h.d.?

I really need screenshots as opposed to written instructions.

Many thanks in advance.

I don't know why you're really doing a clean SL install and it would be a bit unusual for Carbon Copy Cloner to say you had some files missing, but all you have to do is boot from the 10.6.x install DVD and follow the install instructions.

If you want or need, you can use Disk Utility etc. to do a "Nuke & Pave" or a 'zero-out' on the normal boot drive, all available from the "Utilities" (menu) item.

Another option to consider is downloading and using the Mac OS X 10.6.8 COMBO Updater to re-install the OS X.

Be aware that Apple has just seemingly removed all the older software you might need and got from the App Store purchases tab. It's unknown if it's just a temporary thing or not. :(

:(

Thanks for your reply pm-r.

I have to do a clean install per one of the links you sent me regarding my erratic Airport behavior. I've tried most of the other options from those links and the CI seems to be my last option.

Regarding Carbon Copy Cloner, I may have inadvertently deleted a piano or guitar file from GarageBand.

I can't download the Mac OS X 10.6.8 COMBO Updater to re-install the OS X, as I am using the library's PC to access the internet as well as post on this site now and in the past.

Even if I could download it to a PC and then upload that to my Mac via a Zip Drive, I really need to wipe the Mac clean, as it seems to be the only sure-fire way to fix any permissions or any other problem regarding Airport before I reinstall the OS.

Once I wipe the Mac clean, I'll install via th OS disc that came with the MacBook Pro (it's either 10.3 0r 10.4) I will then go to the closest Mac store and use their more secure Airport (as opposed to the library's) or Ethernet connection (libraries around these parts don't offer Ethernet) to upgrade back to 10.6.8.

After that I will migrate my Mac HD backup (containing 10.6.8 filed stuff) back into the MBP, then upgrade to the latest OS that 10.6.8 will allow.

I'm wondering though, if I had permissions problems before, wouldn't those be copied into my CCC backup (since I backed up the entire Macintosh HD folder), and then be re-introduced into my clean Mac if I migrate the whole Macintosh HD folder?

Perhaps, I should just drag and drop my old Home folder to the newly cleaned Mac instead, since the only files from the previous Mac in the Home folder will only be documents, music, and video files, which don't contain any permissions?

Again, thanks in advance for any suggestions.

podcartuneist posted: Once I wipe the Mac clean,... and everything said above…

Hence the reason I questioned about doing a "clean install"…

Maybe you should consider taking you Mac to an Apple tech, and one that has normal Internet access… Just a thought. :Blushing:

Any problems you had before that were backed up to CCC will return if you do a full restore.

FYI - all files contain file permissions so i am betting you will have issues when you move your old home folder. This might cause an issue. I would move them as separate folders.

Also I agree with pm-r. If there is an Apple tech available that would be you best bet.

I went to a Mac store on the day of my last post and they recommended I do a Time Machine b/u as it won't bring back any of the problems since it doesn't backup/restore everything ....does that seem right?

I will set up an actual appt., as soon as I logout, take screenshots of Time Machine's setup window with my Ext. hd connected, and get their advice as what to include/exclude in TM's backup.

My main concern of course is to resolve the Airport/internet/(permissions?) issue.

My next concern is to be able to restore my separate (large) audio and video library's (neither one contains any iTunes purchased files) playcounts, ratings etc., and in the case of my Wav audio files, the Artist, Album, CD name etc. via the PowerTunes program.

In praise of CCC, it did do what I needed it to do, which was to find and make/show a list of corrupt files that should be deleted (I wasn't able to complete any backups with those files on my Mac), something that merely dragging and dropping my home folder or the Macintosh HD icon to a ext. hd, (or an actual Time Machine b/u) wasn't able to do.

Because of the CCC backup and it's report, I should no be able to complete a successful Time Machine b/u.

Thanks everyone for your responses.

I will take the time to do periodic updates here, since you were all kind enough to take the time and supply your help.

Also, there might be a slight chance that others reading this may find something they could use herein.

Happy with CCC? Well stick with it. What do you think an Apple employee would say other than recommend TM? Think your problems revolve around using such an old operating system no longer supported with security or other updates from Apple.
