How to fix and identify cause of kernel panic?

My computer keeps freezing on an open app with the rainbow wheel of death. When I go into another app, the freeze spreads until the computer restarts itself. I then receive a panic report. I haven't been able to pin it to a specific app.

I have taken the following steps:
Software update
Run apple diagnostics (hardware test doesn't seem to be available on my model)
Repaired disk (nothing seems to be an issue)
Restarted a million times
Reset SMC
Reset NVRAM
Uninstalled/deleted unnecessary third-party apps
Reinstalled macOS (not wiping the hard drive)
Disconnected everything to make sure it isn't anything plugged in that's causing the kernel panic

More context: This issue began after I "fixed" my hard drive. I had a rare issue that when FireVault is enabled, it causes the disk utility to say that the hard drive is corrupt, even if there are no issues. I unencrypted my hard drive and afterwards it said my hard drive was fine. I thought I had fixed the issue, but that is when the kernel panics began. I'm not sure if this is a coincidence or related.

I just ran out of warranty and want to know if there are any last steps I can take before paying for the Apple Store to fix my issue, or worst case scenario, have to replace my hard drive if that is the real issue. I do have two backup drives with recent backups.

Here is the latest panic report, if anyone could please help?

I think it's related and not coincidence. Your hard drive is failing.

Thanks! I'll bring it into the Apple Store. Do you know why it says my hard drive is fine when I run diagnostics on it/repair the disk?

When you use Disk Utility you are checking the files - mostly by checking the directory of files - for errors. This has very little to do with physical failure, like overheating, motor dying, etc. But, I'm curious what Disk Utility says in the block S.M.A.R.T. Status (you have to first select the hard drive, not a partition under it)?

Do you have another user account you can test with? It probably won't help, but it is an easy test.

Disk Utility previously said that it was fine (I selected everything possible to run first aid on). Now doing it again, it says "First Aid found corruption that needs to be repaired. To repair the startup volume, run First Aid from Recovery."

I then reboot into Recovery and run First Aid on everything I can select. It says everything is fine. When I then restart again into normal mode and run Disk Utility again, it still says it is corrupted.

These are the two reports I get:

When you ran Disk Utility in Recovery, are you selecting the Drive, or the Volume?

I ran it on both (everything I could possibly run FirstAid on).

I just did another First Aid from Disk Utility (not in recovery this time) for Macintosh HD and received this different error message. Not sure if it's related.

Thank you for hanging in there with us, Hannah!
Would it be OK to delete that file "01 Episode 1 (HD).m4v" ? Then run Disk Utility repair from Recovery Mode again.

I can't find the file "01 Episode 1 (HD).m4v" when searching from Spotlight. Is it possible that it's a hidden file?

Thank you all for your help! Going to try to run Disk Utility from Recover Mode again.

It said that it was repaired successfully from Recovery mode. And when running Disk Utility again (from normal boot) it says it is fine. I've noticed the last couple of days I no longer have had kernel panics, but my computer is extremely slow on start up (e.g. can't access Spotlight quickly even though I normally used to be able to, the time and battery and everything on the upper right corner doesn't show up for a while).

Hopefully this worked, but is there any way I can check other than through Disk Utility to make sure my computer is fine, since I can't replicate the kernel panic?

I just ran Apple Diagnostics (holding the D key on startup) and it said everything was fine. The language selection screen was different than when I ran it before... hopefully a good sign?

Do you recall if you were watching a video the last time it panicked? That Episode 1 is a movie of some sort, and it was the corrupted file before. But maybe it's fixed now. I think I'd just use the Mac for a while to see what happens.

The kernel panics tended to happen (but definitely not always) when streaming video online e.g. Netflix, Amazon, Hulu. A while back I uninstalled Chrome in case that was the issue, but that didn't fix it. I don't remember playing a video file stored on my computer that was Episode 1 of anything.

However, after the kernel panics had started, I recently moved a video file that was Episode 1 from a "Previous iTunes Libraries" folder into my iTunes (the episode was missing on iTunes but I had the file on my computer, so I dragged it to iTunes.) I was trying to delete a TV series from my iTunes, so I could just download it later from the Cloud, but it wouldn't give me the Cloud download option. It turned out it was considered as "Hidden" in purchases, so I was able to fix it. I then deleted the series (including Episode 1) from the iTunes app. Do you think the computer still thought there was that movie file on my hard drive?

It seems likely that that movie was involved in the corruption, but I'm not sure how.

Hi, it was 4 days since the last kernel panic and then I had another one. This is the latest panic report:
Is there any chance my antivirus software could be causing this?

Not likely. The panic is reporting a hard drive failure. This is the key line in the report:
Root disk errors: "Could not recover SATA HDD after 5 attempts. Terminating."
However, you can uninstall the useless A/V software and see if the panic stops. You don't need antivirus because there are NO viruses for the Mac at this time. And the A/V software for the Mac cannot and will not protect you from any virus that does get created because currently there is no known way for a virus to attack the macOS. So that software is just wasting your time and money.

Thank you for your advice!! I somehow had a Trojan on my previous MacBook, so I had kept the software installed just in case (someone else pays for it).

I'm trying to figure out my options and am on a budget. Since I no longer have warranty and my laptop is from late-2013, do you recommend I:

1. Bring it in to the Apple Store to get the hard drive replaced. (Not sure how much that will cost and can't find an estimate...)
2. Buy a replacement SSD and install it myself
3. Buy the new MacBook Pro and say goodbye to my current laptop
